Iris Evans Yohe

Iris Evans YoheIris Evans Yohe, age 97, mother of Tom Evans, passed into life eternal on January 27, 2012, in Fredericksburg, VA.

Mrs. Evans Yohe was born in Williamsport, PA, on April 21, 1914, as Iris Hope Hill, the daughter of Franklin and Mary Estella (Case) Hill.  She was the youngest of nine children, all of whom are deceased.  In 1932, she graduated with honors from South Williamsport High School.  After completing her studies and training at the School of Nursing at Central Dispensary and Emergency Hospital, and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC, she was certified as a Registered Nurse in 1935.  She served as a Visiting Nurse in Washington, DC until 1940 when she devoted her time to raising a family.  Later, after her husband, Albert E. Evans, died in 1957, she returned to Pennsylvania and to her nursing profession.  At the age of 51, she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965 from Lock Haven University where she also completed extensive graduate studies.  In 1976, she retired as Senior School Nurse for the South Williamsport Pennsylvania Area School District.

Iris Evans Yohe was an accomplished pianist; a teacher of piano and music; an enthusiastic gardener; an avid reader; a student of religion and theology; and a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many.  She was loved by family and friends for her deep caring for people and her commitment to serving others.  The following quotation reflects this devotion: "I shall pass through this world but once.  If, therefore, there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do, let me do it now...for I shall not pass this way again."  She especially will be remembered for her abiding faith in God's unconditional love and boundless grace through Jesus Christ.  Mrs. Evans Yohe was an inspiration for those who knew her, and, while she will be missed greatly, her family and friends celebrate her life on earth and rejoice in her eternal life with God.  She was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg, VA.

Iris Evans Yohe is survived by her sons, David Albert Evans and his wife, Selena, of Sudbury, MA; and Thomas Edward Evans and his wife, Nancy, of Spotsylvania, VA.  In addition, she had four grandchildren: Thomas Edward Evans, Jr. and his wife, Katherine, of Spotsylvania, VA; William David Evans and his wife, Jennifer, of Fredericksburg, VA; Bethan Evans Davenport and her husband, David, of Niskayuna, NY; and Catherine Evans Fennema and her husband, Kenneth, of Spotsylvania, VA.  She also had eight great grandchildren: Katherine Faith Evans; Stephen Christopher Davenport; Hannah Lauren Evans; Christopher Raymond Davenport; Marcus Brian Fennema; Thomas Edward Evans, III; Gwyneth Lee Evans; and Caitlin Anne Fennema.  She is the widow of Albert Edward Evans, and Kenneth E. Yohe.

A service of celebration will be held at 10:00 am, February 4, 2012, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6170 Plank road (Route 3), Fredericksburg, VA, with reception following.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lutheran World Hunger Appeal, Post Office Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764.

Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
