Calmly Doing Your Will

Getting around to writing or updating a will is one of those things that seems to always wind up at the bottom of a "to-do list." We do not want to stop what we are doing to spend time making decisions about the distribution of our assets. We know it's important, but we keep putting it off for a more convenient time.

Sometimes, however, we get a nudge that makes us act. For example, we become aware of a recent death that came suddenly to a friend who didn't have a will, and how this caused so many problems for the grieving loved ones.

Maybe, we are preparing for a long journey overseas and are motivated to "get our house in order" should something horrible happen during the trip.

Then, again, perhaps we receive disturbing news from a physician that causes us to care for long-delayed estate-planning decisions.

Following through on any of these nudges is a good thing, because living without a will is a risky alternative. Acting on nudges has its downside, too. We can make poor or faulty decisions when hurried or driven by emotions alone.

This is one reason it is important to care for your will (as well as advance medical directives and power of attorney) when you are not facing an emotional reaction to a friend's death, a trip deadline or even the unsettling news of a physical ailment. It is so much better to write or update your will when you have the time and mental quietness to concentrate on making sound decisions regarding your estate when you can do it calmly.

The Mission Office for Planned Giving provides a Will Information Kit to make things easier for you. It includes several items that will help you think through the process and gather information that will be helpful before you see an attorney to prepare your will. Pr. George Sims, Director of the Mission Office for Planned Giving, is also available to meet with you or simply to speak with you by phone. Give him and call and while you're at it, request a will kit. Call 877-526-2448 or email: director@plan2giv.org. Pastor Sims has been working with the Resurrection Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund Board.  He is such a knowledgeable and available resource.  Thank you, Pastor Sims, for making this process understandable and for giving of your time and talents!

Update from Sara in the Dominican Republic
Hey all,

Those of you in the States who are experiencing changing colors, football, campfires, and pumpkin flavored things....I am envious of you!  However, I did get a sweet taste of Fall camping with 4th and 5th graders a couple of weeks ago.  I FINALLY figured out how to post the slideshow for you - I hope you enjoy it!

Joyfully,
Sara

"Roar, sea, and every creature in you; sing, earth, and all who live on you!  Clap your hands, you rivers; you hills, sing together with joy before the Lord, because he comes to rule the earth.  He will rule the peoples of the world with justice and fairness."  Psalm 98:7-9

"Here is the truly Christian life, here is faith really working by love, when a man applies himself with joy and love to the works of that freest servitude in which he serves others voluntarily and for nought, himself abundantly satisfied in the fullness and riches of his own faith."
