Dear Friends in Christ,

"I said, Lord, I'm down here trying to do what's right...But Lord, I must confess that I'm weak now; I'm faltering; I'm losing my courage....  And it seemed at that moment that I could hear an inner voice saying to me, "Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness,  stand up for justice, stand up for truth.  And lo I will be with you, even until the end of the world.

...And I'll tell you, I've seen the lightning flash. I've heard the thunder roll. I felt sin-breakers dashing, trying to conquer my soul. But I heard the voice of Jesus saying still to fight on. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone. No, never alone. No, never alone. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone."

Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sermon of 27 August 1967

We're Engaged!

The Mission Endowment Fund Board is pleased to announce Resurrection Lutheran Church is one of several pilot congregations in the Virginia Synod who will be participating in the Congregational Engagement Process, a program offered by the Mission Office for Planned Giving and the ELCA Foundation.  This yearlong process will help us strengthen our current understanding of stewardship and complement it with an emphasis of planned gifts.  We pray that our participation will be a blessing for you and for our church.

Through the Congregational Engagement Process we will

Ø  Be better prepared to respond to God's call to be good stewards of our gifts

Ø  Strengthen and increase giving for ministry

Ø  Create a climate of giving and generosity with expanded giving opportunities

Ø  Discover a variety of ways to care for self, loved ones, and others

Ø  Expect new gifts through wills and estate planning

Ø  Strengthen community and celebrate growth in giving

Ø  Find great joy in what we do and what we are about

Ø  Annually recognize and give thanks for gifts to the congregation and for ministries of the wider church

Ø  Become examples of generosity for future generations

Ø  Discover how generosity can help us accomplish God's work with our hands

The opportunity before us will be life giving, challenging, and inspiring.  Your participation in the Congregational Engagement Process can help you witness to your faith and make ministry happen in our community and around the world.

Pr. George Sims, Director of the Mission Office for Planned Giving, will be leading us through this process. George came to Virginia in 1988 to serve Reformation Lutheran Church, New Market. From 1975-1988 he served congregations in North and South Carolina.  In 2001 he accepted a call by the Church Council of the ELCA, on behalf of the ELCA Foundation, to serve as a representative of the Foundation and Director of the Mission Office for Planned Giving in the Virginia Synod.

You will discover more about the Congregational Engagement Process over the next few months.  You can expect, on a monthly basis, to learn about the ways this program can benefit you, your loved ones, and our Church.  Please feel free to talk to Pastor Jim or Ken Tillman, our RLC Mission Endowment Fund Board Chairperson, for additional information.

Congregational Meeting set for 30 January

The semi-annual congregational meeting of Resurrection Lutheran Church is set for January 30th. The meeting will be held between services starting at 9:45am.

Because it is between services, there will be no Christian education that day and activities will be available for the children during the meeting.

The specific agenda will be provided closer to the meeting date but there will budget discussion, votes for Synod Assembly delegates, votes on our new purpose statement and guiding principles, stewardship concerns, and other subjects of importance.  This is an important event in our church calendar and your presence and vote will help determine our direction in 2011 and beyond.

Remember, the meeting is January 30, 2011 at 9:45am. Be there.

"Here is the truly Christian life, here is faith really working by love, when a man applies himself with joy and love to the works of that freest servitude in which he serves others voluntarily and for nought, himself abundantly satisfied in the fullness and riches of his own faith."
