Mission of Amazon CARES:  Better health and living conditions for ALL living beings of the Peruvian Amazon region. This includes appropriate care, respect, and protection from cruelty and neglect.
Greetings!

Thank you for reading our first email newsletter from Amazon CARES.  Please help us grow by forwarding the newsletter to at least one friend.  During this critical time for the economy, many are suffering.  Our important work in the Amazon is on shaky ground, but we are determined to continue. Your support is badly needed.  Please make a donation today and save an animal's life. Important changes are occuring for Amazon CARES at this time!  I have re-located to the Washington, DC area where Amazon CARES now has a small office!

We have many, many dedicated volunteers in the US and a constant flow of International Volunteers Veterinarians in Peru!  In addition to Dr. Simon Bate's report below, many other volunteer updates are available.  The Peruvian team is doing an outstanding job based on important achievements obtained since my departure.  I am dedicated to our work, and will continue to lead Amazon CARES from the US, including frequent visits to Peru!  Special thanks to volunteers Shelby Davis and Rebecca Portman for their assistance in getting this newsletter completed!

Sincerely, Molly Mednikow

$153,000 Grant in Jeopardy

Rustic but spacious kennels

Spanish charity "Esperanza" approved a $153,000 grant to CARES.  Their letter stated that they believed Amazon Cares to be an important charity contributing to the environment, public health and development of Peru. Incredibly, the Peruvian Government has blocked the funds, stating that the project does not benefit the HUMAN population.  We have launched a press campaign about Peru's lack of compliance with animal welfare laws. Read the press release...

April Volunteers Assist in the sterilization of 100 Strays Dr. Bate works at a mobile clinic
During a three week campaign, the CARES staff, Dr. Bate, volunteer Rhiann Evans along with local volunteers sterilized and treated over 100 stray dogs & cats.   Dr. Bate commented:
"It was a pleasure to work with such a caring and dedicated team of people. At the same time I was saddened by the state of animals I saw but hopefully I helped in this uphill struggle to improve the problem of street dogs.  Thanks Molly for allowing me this experience and good luck in your struggle to secure funding to continue this extremely vital work."
Donors Save "Bella"!
Bella's RecoveryWhen we rescued a female German shepherd/ Siberian Husky mix she weighed l9.8 pounds (9 kg), less than half her normal bodyweight.  We estimated her to be 6 years old, in a complete state of malnutrition with nosebleeds, mucus, cough, injuries due to the close contact of concrete with her bones, external and internal parasites.  She was abandoned in the outskirts of town, and has suffered much cruelty and neglect.

Carol Benedicto, Howard Lichtman, Robert Jackson, and Sarah Scott donated specifically to help Bella.  As one can see, her recovery is well underway!  Read More ....

Sady`s Adoption!
Sady is Adopted!
Frequent Donors Dottie and David Bonnett of Silverdale,  Washington have rescued many dogs for Amazon CARES, including "Sady."

Sady was rescued a few days after bearing a litter of puppies, all of whom survived!  Sady had a large wound on her side, which we treated along with all other appropriate treatments for a nursing street dog.  Thanks Dottie & David!
