Georgian Triangle pleased to announce formation of Accessible Sport Council

The Communities of Collingwood, Town of The Blue Mountains, Clearview Township and Wasaga Beach have partnered to create easier access for all individuals in these communities to participate in sports and leisure. Often individuals with disabilities assume that they can't participate due to lack of programs, facilities and other resources. This regional sports council will change that perception and that current reality.
On Friday, February 18th at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena, the Georgian Triangle Accessible Sport Council will be presented with a $2500 start-up grant from ParaSport Ontario. The grant, provided though bi-lateral funding from Sport Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport via its Active 2010 - Sport for More program, will be used to create awareness of sport for persons with disabilities; unite disability organizations in order to share resources and knowledge; and advocate for program and service development and accessibility throughout the region.
After the presentation, Team Canada's Sledge Hockey team will take to the ice in a skills competition and one (1) period of play against local celebrities. This event will be a fundraising effort for Breaking Down Barriers, a local organization that assists people with disabilities. After the "challenge", people are welcome to "Try-it-On" by sitting in a sled and maneuvering around the ice.

2011 Ontario ParaSport Summer Games Shaping Up
The 2011 Ontario ParaSport Summer Games Organizing Committee is hard at work preparing for the 2011 Ontario ParaSport Summer Games. We have an amazing vision of what these Games will accomplish, not only for the athletes, but also for our community.
As we work through our "To Do List", we continue to strive to exceed those expectations that will provide the athletes and all our guests with the best experience.
Sarnia Lambton has welcomed and embraced the Ontario ParaSport Summer Games in the past (2003 & 2007) and with the demonstrated interest and support from our community, sponsors and volunteers, we know that Sarnia-Lambton will once again host a great set of Games.
The venues have been secured and the Games will once again be held at the best venues in our community. Athletics, Boccia, and Goalball, will be held at the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track & Field Complex and St. Patrick's High School, Wheelchair Tennis will be held at the Sarnia Riding Club, Lawnbowling at the Sarnia Lawnbowling Club and ParaEquestrian and Fiddick's Stables in Petrolia.
We are also very excited about our Opening Ceremonies and the preparations are well underway. We have secured Harmony a local youth choir to perform and have confirmed the Fidget's for the Opening Ceremonies Dinner.
The Fidget's are a local improv comedy troupe that is sure to entertain. If you like the smash hit "Whose Line Is It Anyway™" starring Drew Carey, Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady and Other Nameless Actors, you'll love The Fidgets!
Since 1989, many of them have been performing improvisational comedy on many stages across Canada and the United States and they've even been endorsed by Red Green, but on August 19th they will perform for our athletes and guests. www.fidgetcomedy.com
For those individuals, organizations and businesses, interested in being part of these Games, we have countless opportunities for you to get involved, from being part of our volunteer team, to supporting and sponsoring these Games, we truly welcome your support.
There is so much more to share and all of it can be found on our Games web site, that is continuously being updated, www.ontarioparasportgames.com and our facebook page, which we would love you to join - www.facebook.com/parasportontario .
As we continue to work together towards presenting these Games our goal will always remain the same, which is to successfully present the Games to the Athletes and the Province as a benchmark for excellence and continue to create memories that will last a life time. See you in August! |
