Patrick Jarvis named 2010 recipient of Dr Robert W. Jackson Medal of Distinction
Minister of Health Promotion and Sport Margarett Best and Johanna Jackson, Dr. Robert W. Jackson's daughter, present Patrick Jarvis with the Dr. Robert W. Jackson Medal of Distinction
There was plenty to celebrate at this year's Concert for Inclusion which took place at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto on Thursday, October 7th. Many very talented performers came out to help raise funds for ParaSport Ontario including Justin Hines, Andrew Craig, Tommy Gilham, Matt Dusk and Jackie Richardson. Toronto is certainly not short of talent when it comes to these incredible entertainers. Audience members could not get enough of each artist who took to the stage.
The audience was also treated to the presentation of the Dr. Robert W. Jackson Medal of Distinction. Named after Dr. Robert W. Jackson, who many consider to be the father of the Paralympic movement in Canada, the Medal of Distinction is awarded to an individual who has shown extraordinary leadership, excellence and dedication to athletes with a physical disability. Prior to the concert, after reviewing an impressive list of nominees for the honour, the selection committee announced the three finalists as Patrick Jarvis, Vicki Keith and Barbara Montemurro.Click here to continue reading |
Play24 sets Canadian Record

On Saturday Augsut 28th, ParaSport Ontario along with the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association completed their goal of hosting a 24 hour wheelchair basketball game at the Harbourfront Community Centre in Toronto. Wheelchair Basketball Canada has recognized the game as the longest game played on Canadian soil. The game was played on both the outdoor and indoor court located at the corner of Bathurst St and Queens Quay with the record set at noon on Saturday, August 28, 2010.
Thirty participants, with various skill levels (from people who have never played wheelchair basketball to players on the provincial and national teams) worked together to set the record. Each player took their turn playing 20 minutes out of every hour. The game ended 1006-917 in favor of the grey team but the score was much closer than that for most of the event. Both teams were back and forth until an early morning charge after breakfast when young stars Eric Voss and Kevin Wakeling took over for the grey team and pulled away.
