"ParaSport" Trademark Approved
ParaSport Ontario is pleased to announce that its application to trade mark the term "ParaSport" has been approved by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
After a change in the Canadian Paralympic Committee Trade Mark Use Policy in 2008, Paralympics Ontario was asked to remove the term "Paralympic" from its corporate name. The name ParaSport Ontario was chosen to replace Paraylmpics Ontario, and was officially launched at the Ontario ParaSport Awards in November 2008. Immediately following, ParaSport Ontario took the necessary steps to reduce any future risk of having to go through another costly name change and applied to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office to trade mark the term "ParaSport".
In order to protect the "ParaSport" trade mark, ParaSport Ontario is now in the process of developing a Trade Mark Use Policy and Agreement for organizations wishing to use the term on an ongoing basis within their organization name, program, etc. When this is finalized, the policy guidelines will be available on the ParaSport Ontario website. For further information please contact ParaSport Ontario at (416) 426-7187. |
Sault Ste Marie Accessible Sport Council Officially Launched

On May 9, 2010, the Sault Ste Marie Accessible Sport Council officially launched with a free Accessible Sports Show at the John Rhodes Centre
Don Calvert, the Council's Chairman, was injured in an auto accident six years ago and is now a paraplegic. "Coming from a strong athletic background, I was shocked that our municipality offered very limited sporting opportunities for persons with disabilities in our community," Calvert said. "With ParaSport Ontario's help, we have started this council which is the first step to ensure that, just because someone has a disability, it does not mean that they cannot participate in sports."
At the show, the Sault Accessible Sport Council was presented with a $2500 start-up grant from ParaSport Ontario. The grant, provided though bi-lateral funding from Sport Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion via its Active 2010 - Sport for More program, will be used to create a program of sustainable sporting activities for persons with disabilities in Sault Ste Marie.
Sault Ste Marie joins London and Area and Sudbury as the third community to form an Accessible Sport Council with ParaSport Ontario. If you are interested in forming a council in your community, please contact Lauren Dickler at lauren@parasportontario.ca. |
SportLink (Adaptive) Games Day
The fourth annual SportLink Games Day took place at Laurentian University on May 21st for five hundred Rainbow District School Board students ages 9-13.
This year SportLink assisted in the formation of the Sudbury Accessible Sport Council (SASC) so the theme became "Adapted Sports". We chose fifteen sports in our community that had an adapted component.
Sledge hockey, wheelchair basketball, para-nordic skiing, adaptive rowing, adaptive canoeing/kayaking, therapeutic riding and Special Olympics already existed. Now groups like wheelchair curling, disc golf, bocce, martial arts and dance are beginning to offer sport activities for persons of all abilities.
The students rotated from station to station throughout the day, trying three new sports. Some students were chosen to simulate various disabilities such as being deaf/hard of hearing, blind and not having use of their lower limbs.
Hopefully this day has given our able bodied students a better appreciation and awareness of what their classmates can achieve in sport. For children with disabilities, they will now know what sport can do for them and the joy that sport brings to their daily lives.
