New Communities Picked for Community Sport Development
Four more communities have joined the growing list of communities chosen to be a part of ParaSport Ontario's Community Sport Development (CSD) Program. The most recent communities selected for the program include:
· St. Catharine's Niagara Brock Penguins Wheelchair Basketball Club
· Bewdley's FishAbility Predators Sledge Hockey Team
· Sault Ste. Marie for the development of a multi-sport club
· Elmira/Woolich for the development of a sledge hockey team.
Each of these communities is very excited to be a part of the CSD program. Evelyn Menkveld, Secretary, Woolich Sledge Hockey explained "My son Jason has been playing sledge hockey for seven years now and it has been the highlight of his life!! That kids and adults with a physical disability can get encouragement from each other, build friendships and feel like they can do anything they set their minds to! I look forward to working with Jill in the future as we try to build this club and be a blessing to many more disabled athletes, young and old. " Many communities have rallied around the development of a local ParaSport club with individuals offering to join the executive committees, assist with coaching, design the team logo, and help out with other business. Clubs are always eager for any additional assistance or support for those looking to help out.
The highly successful Community Sport Development program, proudly supported by Ontario Trillium, has been involved in the development of 7 sports clubs across the province to date including: The Peterborough Pacers Wheelchair Basketball Team, The Ottawa Odyssey Boccia Club, The Newmarket Shredders Sledge Hockey Team, Ontario ParaAlpine Race Training (OPART) in the Town of Blue Mountains, The Walden Cross-Country ParaNordic Program in Sudbury, Woodstock Sledge Hockey and the Toronto Wheelchair Basketball Club based out of Bloorview Kids Rehab. The program involves supporting the development of clubs during their formative phase and includes consultation and funding in areas such as equipment, marketing, governance, coach mentorship, volunteer recruitment and fund raising.
