Soothe a Sunburn...Naturally
sun burn

It's easy to misjudge when to re-apply sunscreen, especially in the beginning of summer when your skin first comes out of hiding.  Then you realize -Ouch! - it's too late.

Natural remedies may offer some soothing relief.  They're easy to come by and may already be on hand:

Vinegar - apply vinegar to the area then cover with a towel overnight.

Oatmeal - soak in an oatmeal (not the instant kind) bath for 30-40 minutes.

Black tea - soak three bags of black tea in a pitcher of warm water; then apply with a rag to your skin.

Pure vanilla extract - not the imitation kind; again, apply to skin.

Witch hazel - may also lessen healing time and prevent peeling and flaking.

Aloe vera - the "juice" from a piece cut off an actual plant.  Also, lotion or gel without alcohol, to avoid drying your skin.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

5 Bright Ideas for Your Backyard Picnic

Picnicking out back?  Piece of cake!  Especially with these easy ideas:

popsicle sticks as labels

  • Use Popsicle-stick labels to distinguish turkey from beef burgers or rare from well-done.

Keep salads cold for serving

  • Keep slaw, potato salad and fruit salad cold by nesting the serving bowl on top of ice in a larger bowl or dish.

Table

  • For an easy decorated look, layer the tablecloths.  Mix colors, textures and sizes.

fruit display

  • Make a fresh centerpiece by displaying fruit in an unconventional way:  Fill large clear-fruit centerpiecesglass vases with water at different levels, then drop in bright Granny Smiths or other fruit.

 Cupcake foils for votive candles

  • As day turns to dusk, use cupcake foils for elegant, disposable votive holders.  Or place votives in jelly jars or vases if it's breezy.
