On a
Personal Note... |
Proudly announcing I'm now a Military Mom!

Our daughter Stephanie was sworn into the Navy on December 20th in our home.
After graduation from college in May with a Business & Commercial Aviation degree, she reports to Officer Candidate School in June (Newport, RI).
After that, flight training in Pensacola, FL, with dreams of being a fighter pilot.
Wasn't it just yesterday, I was rocking her to sleep? Now, she is, quite literally, about to fly the nest.
Time - it's fleeting, at best. Cherish each moment with those who are important to you. |

Greetings!
Change the old cycle of making, then breaking, your New Year's Resolutions. This year, be S.M.A.R.T. |
|
5 Smart Tips
for Making - & Keeping - Your Resolutions | | |
Whether you've resolved to spend more time with family, exercise, organize or something else, if you want that goal to stick, it needs to be S.M.A.R.T.
Specific -A small, specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a big, general goal. Instead of "I want to exercise more," state your goal, for example, as "I will walk 20-30 minutes on Tuesday & Thursday after work & on Saturday morning, or 3 times/week."
Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress. How much? How many? How often? This makes it easy to stay on track. Instead of "I will organize my filing cabinet," you might state your goal as "I will spend 15 minutes Monday-Friday to purge one file folder each morning."
Attainable - Be realistic about what you're willing and able to do. Instead of "I will leave work at 5:00 every day," a more realistic goal might be "I will leave work in time to be home for dinner with my family 3 nights a week."
R ecorded - Write your goal - on a notepad, your computer or phone - where you can refer to it often to keep it in mind. Also, record each achievement in your progress...each time you walk 30 minutes, each time you leave work in time to have dinner at home, etc. This becomes a visible "pat on the back" showing that you are making progress.
Time-framed - An appropriate deadline gives a sense of urgency. When you say "by May 1st," "before I go to sleep," or "at the end of each week," you set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal. Add a date to the earlier example - "I will spend fifteen minutes Monday-Friday to purge one file folder each morning in order to complete the file cabinet by April 30th" - now you've got a deadline to keep you focused. |

4 Resolution Myths | | |
MYTH #1: I need to feel ready, then I'll start on my goal. Everything is not going to be perfect...ever. So if you're waiting for just the right time to start on your goal, it won't happen. Rather than waiting to "feel ready," as Nike says, Just Do It.
MYTH #2: I've messed up already, so I need to wait until next year to start off fresh. Goals are not an all-or-nothing proposition. When you fall short or miss, don't beat yourself up or use it as an excuse to throw everything away. Life happens. Keep striving.
MYTH #3: Keeping my goal a secret will protect me from embarrassment if I don't make it. Actually, keeping it a secret almost ensures you don't make it! Instead, tell at least one person who will hold you accountable - a resolution buddy. Even better when it's someone with a similar goal, so you can encourage each other.
MYTH #4: Reaching my goal will be easy. Usually it takes serious and sustained effort to accomplish anything worthwhile. But you can make it easier by anticipating and preparing for obstacles before they happen. Also, figure out a Plan B for those times when doing the usual just won't work - a good-enough substitute can help you stay on track.
Remember - Change is a process. It won't happen overnight. Celebrate mini-milestones along the way...and you'll have many milestones to celebrate later! |
