Got Company? GET REAL! |
If you stress out getting your home ready for entertaining this season, consider the following:

*Be realistic about what guests will notice. During a party, guests are talking and having fun - not going around your home with a white glove and a magnifying glass. So pay attention to areas that will be noticed and do those things that will have the biggest impact on your guests comfort (and your peace of mind).
*Focus your efforts on rooms that the guests will use and see. If necessary, shut the doors on the rest. Lock them if it makes you feel better.
*Your priority should be the bathroom (choose one for guest use) and kitchen. These rooms have the greatest potential "yuck-factor" if left unattended.
*Bathroom - You'll certainly have it clean, but don't neglect the little touches that say you're company ready: Put out fresh soap, a new roll of toilet paper on the dispenser, a full box of tissues on the counter, and empty the trash.
This season, of all seasons, when you entertain, decide to loosen up about perfection...relax and enjoy precious time with friends and family.

Greetings!
Dashing through the snow? What about dashing from the office to a party? And does buying presents for certain people leave you feeling stuck between a Jingle-Bell-Rock and a hard place? Here's Ho-Ho-Hope for both of these seasonal situations! |

Presents for Parents (& Other Picky People)
"Don't get me anything." Translation: "Don't get me anything I don't want or need, or anything that creates more work for me."
Finding the right gift for some people can be downright difficult. Our Idea List makes it easier.
Thrice-Enjoyed - Tickets to a sporting event, concert, play or movie theatre give enjoyment 3 times: as they anticipate it, experience it, & remember it.
Over & Over - A membership or an annual or seasonal pass may be the perfect choice. Possibilities range from a museum or zoo to an amusement park or National Park.
Edibles - Whether it's from a gourmet shop, a local bakery or your own home, something they love to eat will hit the spot.
Remember When - Things that were so great but aren't around anymore can probably be found at The Vermont Country Store.
For Others - Make a donation in their name to their favorite cause.
Armchair Enthusiast - a magazine subscription lets them travel easily, adventure safely, or enjoy their hobby.
Gift-of-the-month - Treat them to something special for a few months or all year through. Just about anything from hobbies to clothing to wines can be found in this format. Check out gourmet foods from Omaha Steaks or specialty juices from Red Jacket Orchards.
At Their Service - Services that make life easier (think pet grooming, mobile detailing, or California Concierge!) will be much appreciated.
Helping Hands - An idea especially for older loved ones: give your expertise in technology or little fix-it projects that may be difficult for them but a breeze for you. |

Party-Perfect in a Jiffy
No time for a wardrobe re-do before a party after work? You can be party-ready in no time with one or two subtle changes:
WOMEN:
*One-piece wonders - Swap your blazer for a cashmere wrap or your button-up for a tee or tank in a fancy fabric (charmeuse, lace, metallics).
*Makeup - When touching up your makeup, kick it up a notch. Add eye shadow and a lipstick that's bolder-than-business-as-usual.
*Hair - Transform your everyday look by adding a jeweled or metallic clip, comb, or headband.
*Accessories - Dress up your office-wear with statement jewelry, a festive sweater or scarf, or a brightly colored bag.
*Shoes - A strappy sandal, a slightly higher heel or a festive flat can reinvent what you wore to work. But don't neglect comfort...parties are more fun if your feet are happy.
MEN: *For a casual party, trade your jacket for a festive sweater to pull over your collared shirt.
*Need to stay in your suit? A simple tie change will be perfect: switch to one in a holiday theme or a bold and bright holiday color (red, green, blue, gold or silver).
MEN & WOMEN: Fragrance - just keep it low-key. |
