| | Melon Madness | | |
Why is it so hard to pick out a good melon? Perhaps, it's because we can't SEE the part we'll be eating! Here's some advice from the experts to de-mystify melons:
Cantaloupe: Look - the skin beneath the webbing should have turned from green to beige. Touch - it should have a slight "give" to it at the stem spot. Smell - it should have a light cantaloupe fragrance.
Honeydew: Look - it should have a rich, creamy yellow color. Touch - it should feel waxy on the outside which means the starch in the melon has turned to sugar so you'll wind up with a sweet, juicy melon. It should be firm all around except for the softer part near the stem. The best melons are fairly large and weigh about 5 pounds. Listen - ideally, you should hear the seeds inside rattle, meaning they've loosened a little from the ripe flesh. However, avoid melons that sound soupy or mushy inside as these are overripe
Watermelon: Look - the discolored spot where the melon was in contact with the ground while it was growing should be yellowish-white. (If it's light green, the melon isn't ripe.)
Touch - scratch the surface of a watermelon with your fingernail (a greenish-white color beneath the outermost layer of the rind indicates a ripe watermelon). Listen - when you thump the side, a ripe watermelon will sound hollow. If you hear a thud or a tone that is high in pitch, it's not ripe.

Greetings!
"Hot Fun in the Summertime."
When you're in school, summer dangles the promise of being laid-back and care-free. Even now, you can still have it easy this season with these hot tips for beauty, food and fun. |
| Beauty and the Heat | |
- Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15. Apply 30 minutes before going out and re-apply every two hours.
- For healthier alternatives, consider the "UV free" options such as bronzers and tinted moisturizers. See our FREE list of the Best Self-Tanning Products on today's market.
- If, in spite of your best efforts, you get that painful burn, heat a cup of regular oatmeal with one-half cup whole milk until cooked. Let cool and apply to burned skin. The oatmeal soothes and the milk acts as a gentle exfoliant to remove dead cells.
- On really hot days, use a hydrating toner instead of moisturizer -- it will keep your skin balanced but won't feel heavy or greasy.
HAIR
- Sun, humidity and chlorine can damage your hair and make it dry and brittle. Do some damage control with a
deep conditioner and leave it on for several minutes before rinsing it out.
- If you're an avid swimmer, you probably know that chlorine and salt water have an adverse affect on the condition of your hair and hair color. Rinse your hair both before and after swimming and your hair is less likely to soak up chemicals that will cause damage.
- If you need a solution for getting out the chemicals, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo when you get home, and let it dry naturally.
MAKEUP
Instead of applying terra-cotta bronzer over moisturizer, start by stroking a gel bronzer across your forehead and cheekbones and down your nose. Then dab on lotion and blend for a dewy, sun-kissed look.
- Stash your tinted moisturizer or foundation in the refrigerator. When you smooth it on, the heat from your face will melt it in -- you'll look like you have naturally perfect skin.
- Use a cream formula instead of powder, which will streak if you sweat.
- Avoid obvious-looking makeup by wearing the same shade -- such as pink or peach -- on eyes, cheeks, and lips. You'll look like you, just prettier.

Summer brings its own kind of fun...and hazards. Be smart and safe this season:
Grilling: Mariano at Barbeques Galore in Tarzana, CA offers these tips:
- For any type of grill, make sure there are no flammable liquids nearby.
- If your gas grill did not come with an automatic shut-off valve, this should be added.
- When you're finished grilling on a charcoal grill, leave the cover off and close the bottom vents to "kill" the oxygen.
(For more great info on grilling safety or cooking, call Barbeques Galore at (818) 345-7314 or visit them at bbqgalore.com.)
Swimming:
Learn to swim, teach your children to swim and always supervise them around water. Never dive into any water in which you can't see the bottom. Don't jump off rocks, jetties or piers. |
