Greetings!

 "You snooze; you lose."

 NOT!
Sleeping boosts creativity by 33% and also helps you  make tough decisions and solve problems.

We've got tips from the experts on getting a better night's sleep so you can do some great things while snoozing.
You Snooze, You WIN!

Secrets to Better Sleep

Don't skimp then splurge:  Skipping midday meals may seem like a good way to drop a few pounds, but doing so will throw off your body's normal sleep pattern. Large late dinners make matters worse as they simulate your system rather than calming it.

woman eating breakfastDo eat often and early:  Your body uses up energy during the sleep process, and it needs to be restored. Eat a mixture of carbs and protein for breakfast and have six mini meals throughout the day to maintain the right balance of hormones which is essential for falling - and staying- asleep at night.

Don't be a party victim:  Just say no to canapes, cheese plates and mini-meatballs.  High-fat and spicy foods spark indigestion and reflux, keeping you up long past your bedtime.

Do eat carbs for dinner:  A recent study found that people who ate jasmine rice before bedtime fell asleep faster than those who didn't.  The reason?  Jasmine rice is high on the glycemic index so it helps increase the body's production of tryptophan, an amino acid that makes you sleepy.

Don't go to extremes:  When daily calories dip below 1200, you miss out on key nutrients, and this may affect your sleep.  Low iron, for instance, may cause symptoms similar to restless leg syndrome. A deficiency in folic acid may lead to insomnia.

a simple updoDo go herbal:  Before bed, have a cup of chamomile tea: the plant it's made from acts as a mild sedative, calming your body and helping you drift off.

People given a mathematical puzzle before bed were twice as likely to find a shortcut to the solution after getting a good night's sleep, a University of Lubeck study shows.

Good night, sleep tight and pleasant dreams.
HAPPY TRAILS (MIX) TO YOU...

National Trail Mix Day
August 31

Trail MixSure, it's a goofy commemorative day, but trail mix is good for you and easy to make.  So, what's not to celebrate?

You choose the combination and amount, and...Voila!

· Nuts - Any type of nut can be used, but the taste of some nuts may overpower the mix. Walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pecans and cashews are all great choices.  For taste and health, go for the unsalted kinds.

· Seeds - Sunflower seeds (shelled, of course) are a favorite. So are pumpkin seeds.  Flax seeds and others can add additional healthiness to your trail mix.

· Cereals - This can be almost any kind of cereal - granola, bran flakes, shredded wheat, cheerios, Chex - although you'll want to avoid very sugary cereals.

· Crackers, pretzels - Add some crunch to your trail mix with any kind of small cracker or pretzel that you enjoy. Try to get crackers that aren't going to crumble into bits. Cheese crackers and goldfish are a great addition to trail mix.

· Dried fruit - Any type will do. Common ones are raisins, cranberries, apples and bananas. For a more exotic trail mix, try mango or strawberries.

· Chocolate - If your sweet tooth is calling, M&M's work well, as do chocolate chips or white chocolate chips. But, remember, these things melt, so if you're taking your trail mix somewhere warm, skip these.
