11 Years of Service  April 2010
Greetings!

April 22, 2010  is the 40th anniversary of
 Earth  Day

"It's important we perserve this Earth, this place we live."
Earthy Ideas

planet earth
...for celebrating the 40th and everyday.

Okay, maybe it's not as well-known as Christmas and New Year's, but Earth Day has been around for forty years and deserves attention.  Just a few ideas...

 * Plan to visit a National Park:  Terrence Jones set out in his hybrid car for a 3 1/2 month, 33 state, 19,000 mile trek through 88 of the nation's 392 national parks.  "I saw such an amazing connection between the people, the parks and the land."  Pick a park and a date, and start those travel plans!

* Create a more eco-friendly home in five easy steps: Where do most Americans get exposed to pesticides? What everyday places have the worst air quality?  The answer may surprise you.  The EPA says it's inside the home where decidedly un-green-friendly products emit toxic fumes and pose a danger to humans.

1. LOOK: ... at the labels.  They're easy to decipher with bold, capital letters:  "CAUTION," "FLAMMABLE," "POISONOUS," "DANGEROUS." These are signal words.  Try to buy nothing stronger than "Caution".
2. LOCK ... it up.  Poisoning is one of the top five causes of home injury death.  The number of child deaths in this area has dropped with the advent of child proof containers.  But don't rely on the hard-to-open lids.  any item with a signal word should be locked up.
3. USE ... it correctly.  Before using any product, read the label.  Does it recommend gloves?  Put them on.  Does it say well-ventilated area? Go outside.a simple updo
4. BUY ... greener.  It used to take a lot of effort to buy green, but now the markets are flooded with "green products."  However, even if the label says "earth-friendly,"  be vigilant.  Those that have stood the test of time are a better bet.
5. MAKE ... your own.  Our grandmothers got by with little more than baking soda, vinegar and soap applied with some elbow grease.  There is a recipe for nearly every store-bought cleaning product, and most can be made on the spot and with little time.  (Email us for our FREE "Homemade Earthy Cleaning Products Recipes.")

* Go Organic:
Pesticides are not only in the household products we use but also in many of the foods we eat. You can lower your family's pesticide exposure by almost 90% by avoiding the twelve conventionally-produced fruits and vegetables (known as the Dirty Dozen). If you don't buy all organic, at least start with these:
woman buying produce    Peaches               Strawberries
    Cherries                Apples
    Celery                  Lettuce
    Spinach                Nectarines
    Grapes                 Peppers

* Include one of these "earth-friendly" selections for your next movie night:

  Wall-E - rated G
March Of the Penguins - rated G
  Erin Brockovich - rated R
  Free Willy - rated PG

How far you take your dedication to greener products depends on what works for you and your family.  But, remember, children learn best by example, and they'll be living on this earth long after will~
Tax time means... REFUND (we hope)

Cash-in Your Refund

Money experts reveal seven painless ways to put your 2010 refund to good use.

Buy Some Peace of Minda simple updo:  "An emergency cushion (a 3-9 month fund) is more important than ever." says Jean Chatsky.  "Besides the benefit of sleeping better at night, it could actually save you hundreds in interest payments should you have to rely on credit cards to stay afloat."

Play Your Cards Right
:
Paying off high-interest credit cards should be a top priority.  "Every dollar you put against high interest balances is the same as getting a guaranteed 20-30% return on your money."

Think Ahead
:
Invest in a retirement account.  Pretend you did not receive the refund and increase your contribution to your retirement plan by that amount, whether it's your employee-sponsored plan, IRA or Roth IRA.

Upgrade Yourself
:  Invest in job-related skills and knowledge.  According to US Census Bureau, workers with bachelors degrees earn 58% more than high school graduates, and those with advanced degrees more than twice as much.

Ensure Your Wealth
:  Substantially boosting your current liability coverage - whether through your auto policy or an umbrella policy- is often surprisingly inexpensive.  The payoff should you need the coverage is well worth the investment.

Keep it in the House
:  Even small renovations of $1000 can breathe new life into your home.  Kitchen and bath upgrades can make a big difference in both livability and aesthetic appeal.

woman and dogGo to the Dogs:  While their love and attention make pets a treasured companion, there's good evidence that pet   ownership keeps you healthier.  Michael Silverstein's book Women Want More takes a look at what makes women happy at different stages of their lives, and pets were at the top of the list!
