* Leave a lamp on if your guests will arrive after dark, to convey "We've been expecting you." And if arrival time is later in the evening, turn down the bed - a wonderful sight to a weary traveler.
* Provide an alarm clock and a box of tissue, in addition to a good reading lamp, on the bedside table.
* Set out a bowl of fresh fruit or granola bars and a couple of water bottles. Having these on the dresser or table provides an easy breakfast or take-along snack for a guest on the go.
* Bonus! Place fresh flowers on a table and a small box of truffles on the pillow. Add a small handwritten note saying "Welcome!"
BATHROOM
* Clear counter and shower space for your guests to put their personal items.
* Put a new roll of toilet paper on the dispenser, a new bar of soap in the shower/tub and at the sink, and a full box of tissues on the counter.
* Provide a cup or glass next to the sink. Idea: As a way of letting your guest know it's for her, turn it upside down on a small tray or pretty plate.
* Bonus! Plug-in a nightlight. Your guest will be grateful at 2:00 in the morning.
KITCHEN
* Designate a bit of counter, pantry, or refrigerator space for your guest to keep any food items she brought or might buy during the visit.
* Find out any dietary restrictions or preferences ahead of time, especially for breakfast or snacks. Your guest will appreciate being able to stick with a diet or just enjoy his favorites. This can also save you frustration over having bought items that won't be eaten.
* Bonus! Have some of your guest's favorite foods on hand. He'll be more likely to "help himself" - thereby saving you some time - if you have what he likes.
