Greetings!

'Tis the Season...

for travellers.  And whether they're family or friends, chances are you'll be having some arrive at your door.

Hospitality is more than saying, "Make yourself at home."  It's creating an atmosphere that says to your guest, "I'm glad you're here.  I've been expecting you!"

Follow our tips to assure a warm welcome for your over-night guest any time of year.

...Making Your Home Houseguest-friendly

This is not about cleaning the house (although, you'll certainly see to that).  It's more about anticipating your guest's needs and making it easy for your guest to feel comfortable in your home (which has the side benefit of making life easier for you while they're there).  Your attention to a few details can make such a difference.

BEDROOM

bedroom
* Clear space on the dresser-top and bedside table.  Push your personal items to the side or put them away so your guest has room and will be less likely to leave something behind with yours.

* Push to the side any clothes in the closet, and provide hangers of various types.  If a drawer can be cleared, that's good, too.  Some people prefer not to live out of a suitcase.

* Provide an extra blanket so your guest will be comfortable through the night without disturbing you.  Not everyone sleeps at the same temperature.

Leave a lamp on if your guests will arrive after dark, to convey "We've been expecting you."  And if arrival time is later in the evening, turn down the bed - a wonderful sight to a weary traveler.

* Provide an alarm clock and a box of tissue, in addition to a good reading lamp, on the bedside table.

* Set out a bowl of fresh fruit or granola bars and a couple of water bottles.  Having these on the dresser or table provides an easy breakfast or take-along snack for a guest on the go.

* Bonus! Place fresh flowers on a table and a small box of truffles on the pillow. Add a small handwritten note saying "Welcome!"

BATHROOM

bathroom
Clear counter and shower space for your guests to put their personal items.

* Put a new roll of toilet paper on the dispenser, a new bar of soap in the shower/tub and at the sink, and a full box of tissues on the counter.

Provide a cup or glass next to the sink.  Idea: As a way of letting your guest know it's for her, turn it upside down on a small tray or pretty plate.

* Bonus! Plug-in a nightlight.  Your guest will be grateful at 2:00 in the morning.

KITCHEN

kitchen
* Designate a bit of counter, pantry, or refrigerator space for your guest to keep any food items she brought or might buy during the visit.

* Find out any dietary restrictions or preferences ahead of time, especially for breakfast or snacks.  Your guest will appreciate being able to stick with a diet or just enjoy his favorites.  This can also save you frustration over having bought items that won't be eaten.

* Bonus! Have some of your guest's favorite foods on hand.  He'll be more likely to "help himself" - thereby saving you some time - if you have what he likes.

LIVING ROOM/DEN

living room
* Place the remote and program schedule in plain view and within easy reach.

Set magazines, newspaper and other reading materials (especially, local interest) on the coffee table.
