Dear Pond Owner,

Hope everyone had a great summer relaxing and enjoying your water feature!  Summer sure went quickly and now it is time to prepare for fall and winter yet again.  Please make sure you book your winterization as soon as possible.  Here are some tips so you have a great fall, there is also some seasonal info and reminders on our website

Winterizations Now Being Scheduled!

The Pond Squad is now booking their fall shutdowns.  If you would like us to close down your feature and get it ready for winter then simply fill out the form linked here and we will be in touch with you soon.  We are going to be starting cleanouts mid October, so please respond as soon as possible.

Fall Leaves

For those of you who have a highly treed area around your pond we highly recommend adding a leaf net over your pond.  It will save you time cleaning out your skimmer and trying to clean the debris at the bottom of the pond.  This is important as decaying leaves can form a toxic gas that can actually be lethal to your fish over the winter.

Congratulations!

Fish and Fall

fall fishy
Since the weather is still nice I am sure your fish are still wanting lots of food.  However, when the temperatures start to fall it is important not to feed your fish too much and when you do feed them use a low temperature fish food.  This is because their metabolism starts to change and prepare for winter and you also don't want uneaten food settling on the bottom of the pond.  You should also stop feeding your fish when the water reaches consistently around 10 degrees.

Can I run my pump all winter?

You have two options in the winter, you can leave your pump running all season or you can choose to shut it down.  Most of our clients choose to shut it down as running it does require you to watch your pond very closely.

To Keep Your Pond Running:
This will require a little babysitting to make sure an ice dam does not form which could cause water to run out of the Pondless® Waterfall
or Pond basin. You will also still need to replace water loss so the pump can continue to function properly. This extra effort during the winter will reward you with the most beautiful ice formations and patterns around the falls and streambeds.

To Shut Your Pond Down: (this is what most clients do)
-- first unplug your pump and pull it out of the water. The pump should be stored in a frost-free location, submerged in a bucket of water to keep the seals from drying.
---If you have fish, a small re-circulating pump that bubbles at the water surface is necessary to oxygenate the water. You will also want to install a heater (floating deicer) to keep a hole open in the ice to allow for a gas exchange, keeping your fish alive. It is not necessary to oxygenate the water or keep a hole open in the ice if you don't have fish
.
