Fun Tip!

Did you know many parts of the cattail plant are edible!  In the spring, the new roots and rhizomes were and important food source for native people when other food was scarce.  They contain more starch than potatoes, and more protein than rice.  The young shoots can be used as a cooked vegetable and the pollen can be used in baking goods!

Keep up with your bacteria!

Now that the warmer weather is here most ofAquaclearer your ponds should be cycled and nice and clear.  However, don't forget your weekly dose of bacteria (Aquaclearer) is what we recommend.

New product:  We have been trying a new product called Ecobarley, it is a concentrated liquid barley that you add to your pond or pondless.  We have been using it on our pondless and I have noticed a huge improvement in the build up of string algae.  It does have a brownish tinge to the water however.
When you put your hand in a flowing stream, you touch the last that has gone before and the first of what is still to come."

This months Pond Questions:
1)  Why don't I have a lot of blooms on my lilies?

fact:  Lilies need at least 7 hours of unobstructed sunlight per day.  Yes, you will get some flowering and leaves when less, but for truly knock out lily sun is a mandatory requirement.  Lilies are also heavy feeders, they need to be fertilized.  We recommend using the fertilizer sticks that will feed your plants year long, giving your plants the bloom boost you want.

 2)  What can I do about the string algea on my stream or waterfall?

tip:  A product we recommend (and use ourselves) is Ecoblast.  This is a white powder that you sprinkle on the rocks.  It is not meant for in your pond.  For best results, turn off your pump, sprinkle the Ecoblast over the areas, let the product sit for at least 10 minutes (I usually let it bake in the sun for about half an hour) then turn your pump back on.  It will turn the algae brown and will end up in your skimmer, so make sure you check that isn't getting clogged after you treat a pond waterfall.  Also, try the new liquid barley formula Eco Barley, to help in prevention.

As always...Happy Pondering!!
