Spring is here and we thought we would dedicate this newsletter to our favorite pets...our fish! So many pond owners ask questions about their fish, especially about spawning and having baby fishies. Well, here are the "birds and the bees of Koi! |
|
| The Spring Spawn! |
The first thing you need to know is what factors cause a fish to spawn. There are actually two environmental issues that occur, in spring the water warms up and the days get longer. These to changes cause the hormones to be released by the fish causing the female to become full or 'gavid' of eggs and male ready to fertilize.
The next thing that happens can well, really make a mess of your pond! Usually early morning, however sometimes all day, you will see these large koi chase each other around the pond, especially in the shallow rocky areas. This can upset pots, rocks and certainly water clarity! The reason for this is very interesting: The female koi actually has no abdominal muscles to push out her eggs. Instead, the eggs are leaked out becuase of the pressure of pushing her around the pond rocks or plants. The males will even exert a pressure 'bump' with their heads into her flanks to provide extra push needed to expel most of her eggs!
Now, a question we get a lot is why don't I have babies in my pond? Well, now that we have learned how spawning takes place, if you don't have shallows, obstacles or mature plant structures it will basically be impossible for a female to 'push' into anything and release her spawn. There are other factors such as water quality, the types of fish you host, etc. that can also play a part. |
|
During spawning it is not unusual for a female fish to look rather "beat-up". She may have some abrasions on her face and flanks. These will heal well and quickly if you have healthy water quality in your pond. |

| Survival of the FRY! |
In about two days after spawn takes place, the eggs will hatch, they are so small at this point you will rarely see them. If they are in a hiding spot, like gravel of the pond they will hide there, living off their yok sac for energy for about 24 to 36 hours. Then, they will actually swim to foliage of the pond. If you have some good hiding spaces they may live, but if found, there will be no babies left by the next day.
If the fry do survive, they will grow about an inch per month in the first year of life. We had about 50 babies survive the winter and they are already eating fish food. Of the babies that live, only a small percentage will have colors of any appreciable brilliance. The vast majority of babies from your ponds will be grey or brown, this is because the genes for that color are common. We are fortunate to have many that have colored in a huge range.
NOTE: Many of your ponds have mixed koi and goldfish. You are more likely to have babies survive if you have just koi as they won't usually eat the eggs as much as goldfish who will feast on those big koi eggs. |
