Get out the Cheerios!

Coming Out Of Winter Hibernation!
I am sure the stir of those fish have gotten you excited to feed the koi.  Remember they have been in hibernation and the bodies are just started to function normally again, so don't be too aggressive with the food.
The first foods in the spring must be easily digestible.  A great trick is Cheerios, good for them and they like it!  Your fish can start to be fed when the pond water is above 55 F.

The Sharing Circle
Since we all learn from each others experiences we are going to start a little sharing circle.  We would love to hear your tips, joys or stories.  Simply email us with a picture too, if you would like and we will post it in our next newsletter.

I will start with what I enjoy so much about my pond.; It is seeing my kids and the neighbours children interact with it.   I love to see them feeding and talking to the koi.  Ponds are so interactive and educational, that whenever  my kids study ecology, nature or habitats they have so much to offer the class because of their first hand learning.
Now that is better than any TV show!!siera n taco

Water Plants 101- Plant of the Month

Water Plant of the Month:  So you are at your favourite Garden Center, (TERRA Greenhouses), wandering through the  Pond department  just itching to buy your pond a present.  Here you'll find our favourite plants and tips to keep them happy and healthy in your pond.

April  - O2-some Oxygenators!

We've got two reasons why we love these types of plants in our ponds.  They provide Oxygen and Sanctuary.  Oxygenating plants help to keep water pure and clear.  These plants grow under water, just like the plants you see growing in lakes.  They have the ability to absorb excess nutrients from the water and liberate oxygen during the day.  Second, they provide spawning space for fish, and shelter and protection for baby fish.  Who doesn't like to see baby fish in their pond?  These plants help keep those babies safe and secure until they can swim around with the big guys.

Oxygenating plants are available as cuttings and come in mesh bags.  Make sure you remove them from the bags before placing them in your pond.  Use 1 bag per 5-6 sq. Feet of open surface area.

Two of our favourites are:

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum Demersum) and Aquatic Mint (Micromeria Brownii).

Hornwort does not require planting; just drop it in the water after removing it from the mesh bag.  How easy it that!  We like to weight it with a stone so that it sinks to the bottom of the pond and stays there instead of floating into your skimmer.   It likes ponds with full sun to partial shade.

Aquatic Mint has roundish, light green leaves, and of course a fresh minty scent.  It is considered a tropical plant (zone 9), so it may not overwinter in our climate.  It also likes full sun to partial shade.  Remove the cuttings from the bag and tuck half of the stem into moistened areas, such as around the edges of shallow spots or in streams.hornwortaquatic mint

Tips To Tackle Your Cleanout Yourself

Pond Cleanout Checklist

Planning to get your hands dirty this spring with a much-needed pond cleanout? Well, no matter how much you read on the subject, nothing makes the project go smoother than to be prepared with a few essential items before you strap on your hip wadersand wade into the pond.

  • Kiddie pool (or similar, large container to hold fish and frogs).
  • Net to cover fish container to prevent them from jumping out.
  • Fish net to catch the fish in the pond.
  • Water lily fertilizer tablets.
  • A couple of five-gallon buckets to make collecting leaves and debris easier.

  • Rubber gloves.
  • A pump with 25 feet of 1.5 to 2-inch discharge piping.
