In ponds that have balanced ecosystems with fish, plants and space, the biological process takes care of problems through the seasons.   

  However, there is a climax for all natural ecosystems.  All riverbeds and ponds eventually turn into swamps as organic solids accumulate, filling them in over the years.  On a very microcosmic level, this happens to your pond to, and no one wants that!

  Cleaning your pond every year is good as it keeps the pond in the "new" phase with the best possible water quality where plants and fish can grow rapidly and prosper.

Don't worry those little fishies will soon be coming up to greet you.  Even though goldfish and koi are not indigenous to North America and don't flourish in the winter they do survive.  Since they have gone all winter without eating the spring time is important to rebuild thier energy stores and supporting the immune system.

  The first foods in the spring must be easily digestible.  A great trick is Cheerios, good for them and they like it!  Your fish can start to be fed when the pond water is above 50 F.
