Rabbi Saiger, Rabbi Appleby, Rabbi Beyer 3 Rabbis, 3 Approaches to Judaism April 9, 2011
3 Rabbis, 1 Book
May 14, 2011 2pm at Temple Emanu-El
Discussion and study based upon
Steinberg's "As a Driven Leaf" Dairy Dessert Potluck
As an added bonus Sierra Nevada Chorale will do several pieces from Fiddler On the Roof! Come early!
The program held in partnership with Temple Sinai and Temple Emanu-El was a success. The three rabbis talked about the uniqueness and overlap between the movements in Judaism.
The next community program will be May 15 at 2pm. Please read Milton Steinberg's historical novel, "As a Driven Leaf," in preparation for that learning session. It can be found HERE. Steinberg's novel brings to life the Sages of the Talmud and is an exploration of matters of faith, doubt, and choice. Even if you don't read the book, come to the session anyway. On a more personal note, Tom and I just returned from a Carribean cruise on board Celebrity X's Solstice, where I worked as the cruise rabbi (pics are on my personal Facebook site). The cruise was delightful and we had good weather. What a beautfiul ship! They had glass blowers doing one or two shows a day from the Corning Museum of Glass. It was relaxing and wonderful and so needed after all the work for Passover!
Thank all of you who continue to support Temple Beth Or as we grow.
Many Blessings to you & yours, Rabbi ElizaBeth Beyer

TALMUD MONDAY 12-1pm
Each week we meet on Monday from 12-1pm to discuss literature that is 1500 years old. Lately, we have talked about how the Sages dealt with prayers and talked about the Omer. FAITH FORUM
Check out the Faith Forum which appears each Friday in the Reno Gazette Journal. The Faith Forum answers a question each week and responses are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. Here's a copy of her response from April 25th to the question, "Who Does G-d Love The Most?" G-d Loves Each One of Us "G-d has told you what is good. What does G-d expect of you but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your G-d." Micha 6:8. What if we don't? What if we lead a life that lands us in the gutter? Does G-d love us less? In Hebrew, G-d is called by many names which can refer to a being, a force, a place, or even a process. G-d is the most awesome, infinite, transcendent Mystery, as well as closer and more intimate than the air we breathe. According to the Sages, G-d is everything and No-thing. In the words of the Lubavitcher Rabbi, "There is nothing outside of G-d." So, is it possible that G-d loves some people less? No. Not even for those who have made a mess of their life. G-d doesn't play favorites.

Congregation Temple Emanu-El Relaunches
Rosh Hodesh: It's a Girl Thing!, a program of Moving Traditions
Innovative Program for Adolescent Jewish Girls |
Congregation Temple Emanu-El's "Rosh Hodesh: It's A Girl Thing" monthly program is starting back up and is open to any middle-school-aged Jewish girl in Northern Nevada. The new group facilitator, Temple Beth Or member Susannah Skyer Gupta, is very excited to learn and lead alongside the girls as they confront challenging growing-up issues in a Jewish context. Girls, put your minds at ease: this will be hands-on, girls-only, mellow and have snacks --- it's not religious school.
Check out all the details on this exciting program, Moving Traditions, Rosh Hodesh: It's a Girl Thing!; at these links: www.movingtraditions.org

Tzedakah - Donations - Charity - Justice
What is the "reward" of Tzedakah?
Click here to donate to Temple Beth Or in multiples of $18. Why 18? It's the number for chai (Hebrew letters chet and yud) which equals life. Every Hebrew letter equals a number. Jews often donate in multiples of $18. L'chayim - "To Life!"
(וזורע צדקה שכר אמת (במשלי י״א "He who sows tzedakah has a 'reward' of truth" (Proverbs 11).
פירוש: ששכר זריעת הצדקה היא מדת אמת This means that the attribute of truth is the (G-d-given) reward for sowing tzedakah.
According to the Tanya, Iggeret Kodesh, epistle 6
The Targum and other commentaries read "secher" as "payment of a reward," can be understood to mean that the individual who sows charity receives a true reward, i.e., an everlasting reward, rather than a reward that consists of truth.
ChaBaD translation
When will Moshiach come? When the last coin is gone from the purse. Sanhedrin 97a. According to the Tanya, this can be fulfilled on a spiritual level by being as humble as the destitute. Iggeret HaKodesh, end of epistle 10. |
Dues for 5771 / 2011 |
Dear Chevre,
Thanks to so many of you who have paid your annual dues. Those help keep Temple Beth Or alive and well. We are please to annouce that we were able to pay our rent for our new space at Paradise this year.
If you have not yet paid your dues ($550 for family or $360 for individual), please do so. Many sincere thanks to those of you who donate regularly to Temple Beth Or. Please continue to give generously.
Your donations support our on-going work, such as classes (bnei mitzvah education for children, Talmud for adult learners and a Judaism Class for those new or returning to Judaism), meetings with our partners (Hillel and Elko), our High Holiday Music group, outreach to our community (for example this month services in Elko), visiting those who are ill or dying, feeding those in need, providing resources to homeless and much more.
If you are not personally able to do these mitzvahs, then you are supporting those who work on them. In the heavenly sphere, your donations are counted towards the good work, as if you had done the mitzvah.
Many blessing to each of you, reb |

Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d, not just learning about G-d. Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is good too. We'd love to have you join us. Our partners include Nevada Hillel (Jewish student group at UNR) and the Jewish Community of Elko County. For more information, contact Rabbi ElizaBeth Beyer at 775-322-5542 or redsunrize@yahoo.com |
