First Night Chanukah

First Night of Chanukah, Dec. 1st

(yes there's a chanukiah in the background)
Pizza and Ice Skating

Nevada Hillel, AEPi

  שלום שלום שלום שלום שלום

Shalom Chevre,
On Thanksgiving morning, we had a progressive mezuzah party, stopping at homes and putting up a new mezuzah or one in which the klaf (scroll) inside needed to be changed.  Klafs are checked or changed usually every seven years.  If you need a new klaf, Elad Rosenfeld is a new soifer in the Bay Area.   For information and contact click HERE.  Contact us and we're happy to come help you put up your new one.
For the First Night of Chanukah, NV Hillel and AEPi (new Jewish fraternity @ UNR)  enjoyed the downtown chanukiah lighting by ChaBaD, awesome pizza at Spread Peace Cafe and ice skating until our feet were tired.
On the Third Night of Chanukah, Shabbat Services were highlighted by many people bringing chanukiah to light together.  We also had our erev bar mitzvah Max lead us in Chanukah songs and Kabbalat Shabbat.  Join us at the Atlantis Hotel in Paradise A ballroom when Max will officially be bar mitzvah on January 7, 2011.  The DeMar family will host a light oneg following the services.
On the Fourth Night of Chanukah, we enjoyed Matahma Moses Comedy Show at the Studio on 4th street.  The show was amazingly funny.  After the show, we continued on to the Indian Restaurant at Virginia and Vassar.
If you haven't found great Chanukah music, check out the story of the Maccabeats at the New York Times City Room Blog HERE.  Their viral video has been viewed over 2 million times.

Tzedaka translates as Justice,

not as Charity

Dear Chevre,

Many sincere thanks to those of you who have donated to Temple Beth Or.  Your donations support our on-going work, such as classes (bnei mitzvah education for the children, Talmud for adult learners and a Judaism Class for those new or returning to Judaism), meetings with our partners (Hillel and Elko), our High Holiday Music group, outreach to our community (for example this month services in Elko), visiting those who are ill or dying and much, feeding the homeless and much more.

If you are not personally able to do these mitzvahs, then you are supporting those who work on them.   In the heavenly sphere, your donations are counted towards the good work, as if you had done the mitzvah.

Thank you so much for your kind and generous donations.  Many blessing to each of you, reb

Tzedakah

What is the "reward" of Tzedakah?
According to the Tanya, Iggeret Kodesh, epistle 6

Click here to donate to Temple Beth Or in multiples of $18.  Why 18?  It's the number for chai (Hebrew letters chet and yud) which equals life.  Every Hebrew letter equals a number.  Jews often donate in multiples of $18.  L'chayim - "To Life!"

(וזורע צדקה שכר אמת (במשלי י״א
"He who sows tzedakah has a 'reward' of truth" (Proverbs 11).
פירוש: ששכר זריעת הצדקה היא מדת אמת
This means that the attribute of truth is the (G-d-given) reward for sowing tzedakah.
The Targum and other commentaries read "secher" as "payment of a reward," can be understood to mean that the individual who sows charity receives a true reward, i.e., an everlasting reward, rather than a reward that consists of truth.  ChaBaD translation

When will Moshiach come?  When the last coin is gone from the purse.  Sanhedrin 97a.  According to the Tanya, this can be fulfilled on a spiritual level by being as humble as the destitute.  Iggeret HaKodesh, end of epistle 10.

Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d, not just learning about G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is good too. We'd love to have you join us.  Our partners include Nevada Hillel (Jewish student group at UNR) and the Jewish Community of Elko County.  For more information, contact Rabbi ElizaBeth Beyer at 775-322-5542 or redsunrize@yahoo.com
