שלום שלום שלום שלום שלום

Shalom Chevre,

Happy Birthday to the BeSHT!  The 18th of Elul is the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov.  He is "the Harry Potter of rabbis."  Stories of him performing miracles abound in Chasidic literature.  For some inspirational stories, read "The Light and Fire of the Baal Shem Tov" by Yitzhak Buxbaum.

The BeSHT said, "Where a person's mind is, there he is, all of him.  If he's thinking of G-d, at the moment he's in heaven and before G-d. If he's thinking evil thoughts, G-d-forbid, he's actually standing with both feet in hell... so be careful of what you're thinking about."  Id p. 285.

During this month, we think about teshuva, returning to G-d.  The  New Year, Rosh Hashanah begins September 8th and the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur begins September 17th.  During this Hebrew month of Elul, our focus is on repentance.  Mending or changing our ways.  Letting go of habits that no longer serve us, polishing up who we are to be better people in our relationship to G-d and to our world.  We ask ourselves how can we change how we move through the world and who we are to help others more?

Our Selichot service this month, led by Barbara Ries, will set our intention towards this focus which is a theme throughout the High Holidays.   See our schedule of services.  No charge for services, but donations are welcome.  Come join us at the Student Union, Ballroom A.

Talmud teaches, "Great is teshuva, for it reaches the Throne of the Glory of G-d." Yoma 86a. The Koretzer Rebbe explains that concept saying that teshuva  "unites with the Throne of Glory and becomes a part of it." In other words, your teshuva actually becomes part of G-d.  Amazing!

Where Do Dues and Donations Go?

Dear Chevre,

Many sincere thanks to those of you who have donated to Temple Beth Or.  Your donations support our on-going work, such as classes (bnei mitzvah education for the children, Talmud for adult learners and a Judaism Class for those new or returning to Judaism), meetings with our partners (Hillel and Elko), our High Holiday Music group, outreach to our community (for example this month bioethics committee at St. Mary's re: Jewish needs at end-of-life), visiting those who are ill or dying and much, feeding the homeless and much more.

If you are not personally able to do these mitzvahs, then you are supporting those who work on them.   In the heavenly sphere, your donations are counted towards the good work, as if you had done the mitzvah.

Thank you so much for your kind and generous donations.  Our High Holiday liturgy speaks about how "tzedaka" (charity), sweetens and changes the heavenly decrees for the good.

May you and yours be blessed for a sweet New Year, reb

"We are obligated to be careful with the Mitzvah of Tzedakah more so than with any other positive Mitzvah. For Tzedakah is the sign of the truly righteous seed of our father, Avraham, as Scripture states: 'For I have known him (Avraham) in order that he might charge his descendants... to do Tzedakah... (Genesis:18:19)'. And the throne of Israel cannot be established and the true faith cannot stand, except through Tzedakah, as Scripture states 'You shall be established through Tzedakah (Isaiah 54:14).' And Israel will not be redeemed except through Tzedakah, as Scripture states: 'Zion in justice will be redeemed, and its captives through Tzedakah (Isaiah 1:27).'" Tzedakah

During a lesson with one of our TBOR students, we were talking about what does it mean to be a "Jewish adult?"  One thing that means is that we have an obligation to provide our own tzedakah.  Tzedakah is an important part of living a spiritual life that is seen as an act of justice and righteousness.  The Hebrew word is commonly translated as charity but the three letter root is justice.  In the Jewish world, it's a basic value.

Do we give enough?  The Talmud relates that when the sage Mar Ukva examined his impressive charity records before his death, he reflected, "The way is long, but the provisions are small" (Kesubos 67b).  In other words, in his journey between this world and the world to come, he thought that perhaps he could have made better "provisions" (given more charity).

The Torah says it like this:  "This is what the Lord commanded: Take from among you an offering to the Lord; whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the Lord; gold, and silver, and bronze."  Exodus 35:5.  If donating money is too difficult right now, consider giving of your time or your talent.

When will Moshiach come?  When the last coin is gone from the purse.  Sanhedrin 97a.  According to the Tanya, this can be fulfilled on a spiritual level by being as humble as the destitute.
Iggeret HaKodesh, end of epistle 10.

What is the "reward" of Tzedakah?
According to the Tanya, Iggeret Kodesh, epistle 6

וזורע צדקה שכר אמת במשלי י״א
"He who sows tzedakah has a 'reward' of truth" (Proverbs 11).
פירוש: ששכר זריעת הצדקה היא מדת אמת
This means that the attribute of truth is the (G-d-given) reward for  sowing tzedakah.

The Targum and other commentaries read "secher" as "payment of a reward," can be understood to mean that the individual who sows charity receives a true reward, i.e., an everlasting reward, rather than a reward that consists of truth.  ChaBaD translation

Click here to donate to Temple Beth Or in multiples of $18.  Why 18?  It's the number for chai (Hebrew letters chet and yud) which equals life.  Every Hebrew letter equals a number.  Jews often donate in multiples of $18.  L'chayim - "To Life!"

Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d, not just learning about G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is good too. We'd love to have you join us.  Our partners include Nevada Hillel (Jewish student group at UNR) and the Jewish Community of Elko County.  Contact Rabbi ElizaBeth Beyer at 775-322-5542 or redsunrize@yahoo.com
