Shalom Holy Chevre (Holy Group),
At the beginning of December, we met at the Joe (UNR's Student Union) for our first Friday evening of the month Shabbat.   Many thanks to our bass player Corina and guitarist Barbara Ries.  A few minutes prior to service we had the extraordinary good fortune to also have Barbara (the music teacher) and Susan Lisagore join us lending a second guitar and recorder to the ensemble.  What a musical mechaye (Yiddish for wonderful or pleasant)!   After the Torah reading, we talked about Jacob and his struggle with the angel - and yes, sometimes the drash (sermon) is interactive.

Tzedakah

The Hebrew word is commonly translated as charity but the three letter root is justice.  Tzedakah is an important part of living a spiritual life that is seen as an act of justice and righteousness. In Judaism, giving to the poor is an obligation, even by those who are in need themselves. The Talmud says that it is as important as all other commandments put together.  Tzedakah includes giving to worthy causes or education.  For a charitable donation in 2009, send your check before December 31st.

Calendar

Temple Beth Or has a calendar available for a chai price of $18.00.  It is a beautiful commemorative calendar issue of Temple Beth Or's first year.

Temple Beth Or is a transdenominational Jewish congregation that is unaffiliated with a specific denomination in order to better serve and honor the rich diversity of our chevre.  Our services range between Reform and Conservative, with some elements of Renewal and Reconstructionism.  We are an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning.  If you have not yet found a synagogue where you feel at home, drop in for one of our services.  We'd love to have you join us.
