Members spearhead efforts to include CALDA brochures in courts

By Marcel Neumann, President Marcel Neumann 2010

For the first time, California courts and law facilities are now displaying and distributing CALDA's informational brochures, thanks to the initial efforts of CALDA members Angie Walters (Legislative Affairs Chair); Connie Crockett; Janet Greenhow and Carl Knoll.

CALDA members are spearheading efforts to provide the brochures as another valuable alternative to self-litigants.

Since many of our referrals come from CALDA's web site, these brochures will no doubt increase those calls and consequently the business for our members, and at the same time provide the self-litigant with another choice in their legal needs.

CALDA brochureAll of us can continue this grassroots movement by talking directly to the Self-Help Centers, Law Libraries and in some cases the Clerks of the Court about including the CALDA brochure among their referral literature.

If you would like to request copies of the brochure, email me at president@calda.org. Include your name and/or business name, address and your county.

Several CALDA board members attended a review meeting with the Elkins Family Task Force on February 2. CALDA president Marcel Neumann also participated last October during the task force's public comments hearings held in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Prior to the hearings, CALDA submitted written comments and public testimony in response to the Elkins Family Law Task Force "Draft Recommendations" released last October 2009.

"We applaud the Elkins Family Task Force for its dedicated efforts to improve service to the public, especially the simplification of various family law procedures and the creation of writing aids such as declaration templates.  By including information about Legal Document Assistants, the task force will further assist the self-help litigant and also create an environment where the parties will feel valued and heard and create more continuity within the courts," said Neumann.

By April, the task force is scheduled to present final recommendations to the California Judicial Council, the policy making body of the California courts, the largest court system in the nation.

Santa Clara County chapter hosts successful "Brown Bag" event
By Elias DeHerrera, President, CALDA SCC chapter

CALDA Elias meeting

CALDA Santa Clara County is delighted to announce that our first in a series of Brown Bag training sessions entitled "Unlawful Practice of Law" was a great success. It was not only well attended by our regular members but several non members who after discovering what it is that we are all about are eager to become the newest members of the CALDA family!

The class was taught by Jason A. Braxton Attorney at Law. Jason brought the Business and Professions code to life with his explanation of how to approach first contact with a new client and what is considered a prohibited act for LDA's. We all look forward to seeing this engaging speaker again!

We would also like to extend a special Thank You to one of our tireless volunteers; Jacob DeHererra who created our invitations and mailed them to ALL of the LDA's our district. We could not have done it without him!

CALDA "In the News"
In our continuing efforts to raise awareness of CALDA and the Legal Document Assistant profession, CALDA members have been sharing their stories with members of the media, and actively participating in social media (including Facebook and Twitter). Read the stories below, and tell us how you would "use the power of story to profile your success!"
