Thoughts on Tribal Ministry |
Dear Friends of this Ministry,
We trust this letter finds you enjoying God's faithfulness. It seems that internet connection is improving a little here in Puerto Maldonado, our ministry base in the southern Amazon Rainforest of Peru. This is allowing us to resume these web-based e-letters. Slow internet connection has also inhibited us from maintaining our website and blog. Faster speeds are on the way (we hope!). On that note, things are going well for us. Our circle of contacts continues to grow. Since our move to the Amazon last fall, we began by traveling up the area river systems and conducting services in some of the tribal villages. There are still large areas where we have not yet surveyed. At present, we are ministering to two tribes: the Yine and the Amarakaeri. The tribal people among whom we work have so little biblical knowledge. So far, the majority of our time has been spent preaching and teaching to them about salvation and repentence. We've had many that have wanted to pray with us to receive salvation, but we are not interested in them just praying a prayer. We are trying to make them understand the gravity of their decision to follow Christ, renouncing the world and the flesh. From this patient pursuit to make disciples we are starting to see some results. Recently some of the Amarakaeri have asked us to pray with them individually to receive Christ. We have witnessed genuine conviction for sin, and a sense of their need for Christ. Both tribes have many questions, and are concerned that they understand the Gospel. Overall, it has taken much time to build trust with the them, but now that the bond of trust is forming, we have been able to minister to them in a deeper way. We will be leaving for a short period of itineration in the States in a month. Please pray for these tribes, the Yine and the Amarakaeri, that what has been gained will not be lost. I do not write this in unbelief, but as Paul expressed many times in the Epistles, he was concerned that he had labored among them in vain. We recognize we have strong enemies--the Devil, who is always active in stealing the seed of the Word from the hearts of men, and the carnal flesh of the Indians, which by nature may choke out the seed that it become unfruitful. We trust in the prayers of the saints that the good seed will break forth to produce a spiritual harvest. Please pray with us to that end, that those that have bowed the heart to Christ will remain strong and grow to maturity. |

Distribution of Bibles
One of the evident needs for the Indians is for Bibles and reading glasses. In the month of May we were able to purchase five large print Bibles for one village, and still this does not adequately meet the need. The Indians are willing to read the Bible--there is a hunger for the Word. Not all can read, nor can all read well, but they are trying. And to those who can read, we are encouraging them to read to others--for fathers and mothers to read to their children, grandparents to their grandchildren, and so on.
One lady, the wife of the village chief, prayed to receive Christ as her Savior this last weekend. When she received a Bible from us, she asked us to show her where to start reading. I showed her where the New Testament began and taught her where the index was at the beginning of the Bible to know what page number to turn to. My wife encouraged her to read four chapters a day. She responded, "What is a chapter?" So Judith showed her what a chapter was, and that the sentences in between were called verses. What the Indians lack in knowledge, they make up for in sincerity.
We need to purchase many more Bibles. The cost of a large print Bible here is about $25. We would like to purchase 40 more Bibles, which would be a total cost of $1,000. Please consider giving to this great need.
Along with Bibles, we will be loading up with reading glasses when we return to the States. We can purchase reading glasses for about $10 a pair, and would like to purchase about 40 pairs, a total cost of $400.
If you desire to give to these needs, please write either, "For Bibles" or "For Reading Glasses" in the memo of your check. If you desire to donate online through PayPal, please write a short email to us to let us know the purpose of the donation. |

Needed: Financial Partners for this Ministry
This year, 2011, has been a challenging and rewarding one for us. A new field and new culture have been among the challenges we've readily faced. But the greatest challenge has been financial. Beginning in January of this year, our monthly support, which is vital to our continuing efforts to make an impact in this region, plummeted by over $500 each month.
This financial crunch created doubts in our hearts regarding whether we were in the will of God. God graciously provided confirmation of His will for us to continue our labors in this field. With assurance of God's direction, we move forward with confidence, and appeal to you to aid us financially as we press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus to make Christ known and worshipped. |

Thank you so much for all you do to make our missionary ministry possible. We appreciate your labor of love toward us. Your labor for the Lord is not in vain.
