- International Forum on Ageing in Place and Age Friendly Cities -

- 10 and 11 October, 2009 -

Welcome Message from Dr. Hozumi, President of FOIFA Japan and IFA Director

According to 2007 statistics, the number of people aged 65 years and over in Japan was 27.5 million, or 21.5% of the country's total population.  This percentage is even higher in Akita Prefecture with 28% (and increasing) of the population aged 65 years and above, making it the second oldest Prefecture in the country.  The challenges we face in Akita as a result of population ageing include higher numbers of suicide among the elderly, inadequacy of institutional care and insufficient at-home care services.

Dr Hozumi biopicIn Akita we are taking progressive steps to respond to these challenges and turn population ageing into an advantage.  Akita Prefecture will serve as a useful reference point to inform discussion at this important international forum.

I look forward to this opportunity to have key experts come together to present and exchange information on the themes of ageing in place and age friendly cities.  It is my honour to welcome you to Akita Prefecture - An Appropriate Setting for Exchanges around Ageing.

Sincerely,
Dr. Hisashi Hozumi
President, FOIFA Japan

FOIFA Japan will be hosting a major 2-day international forum on ageing-in-place and age friendly cities in the beautiful surroundings of Akita, Japan.  Delegates from governments, NGOs, academia and the private sector will have an opportunity to exchange, network and learn through an exciting and progressive programme.

Senior Officials Meeting 2008
'Ageing in Place - The Way Forward'

In September 2008, the IFA convened a Senior Officials Meeting in association with the 9th Global Conference on Ageing in Montreal.  This event brought together nearly 100 government representatives from 38 countries from both the developed and developing worlds to examine trends in ageing-in-place.  The outcomes of this meeting are being used to inform the programme of the International Forum in Akita, as well as a central thematic track of IFA's 10th Global Conference to be held in Melbourne Australia in 2010.

The IFA produced a Summary Report of the outcomes of the Senior Officials Meeting; this document is available on the IFA website, and can be accessed from the Summary Report box on the left hand column.  In addition, participating delegations produced Country Reports detailing ageing in place initiatives in their own jurisdictions.  These reports can be accessed here
