| IFA's 9th Global Conference on Ageing - Update
The IFA has listened to your frustrations about 'too many concurrent sessions', 'not enough time to answer questions' and 'too many speakers in sessions'. For the 9th Global Conference on Ageing in Montreal we have developed a program based on the three pillars of the WHOs Active Ageing approach (Health, Participation and Security) and respond through these to the 3rd priority of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing ' ensuring enabling and supportive environments'.
The program framework is designed to stimulate dialogue on policy and practice issues through 2hr symposia and workshops which have a mandatory 30min Q&A. In addition delegates have the opportunity to present poster and paper presentations across the conference. Expect to hear from the leading agencies/governments and individuals including DaneAge, Help the Age, AFRAN, Age Concern, the Women's Association for the Better Aging Society (WABAS) and many more.
'Real-time' program planning commencing February means that you can be updated on the speakers, abstracts and planned symposia over the next 6 months. If you have any enquiries on the program please contact Jane Barratt jbarratt@ifa-fiv.org (+1 514 396 3358). Registration fees for IFA members to attend the conference are 20% below the non-member registration. Consider joining the IFA now.

Older People and Emergency Preparedness
The changing global demographic means that in future years the proportion of older people, worldwide, which may be exposed to disasters, will also increase exponentially. Research shows that older adults are more vulnerable to the impacts of disasters as compared with other age groups (Ngo, 2001; Tanida, 1996; Fernandez, 2002). Therefore it is crucial that emergency planners and those who care for older people understand the factors which create this vulnerability particularly since vulnerability is not simply a factor of age. There is a range of health, social and economic factors, which, as people age, place them at risk and affect their ability to prepare, respond and recover from a disaster(World Health Organization (WHO), 2005).

| Meet FOIFA Japan
|
Rapid ageing of the population is a worldwide phenomenon and its impact on the lives of older people, the regions and nations where they live requires coordinated and collaborative efforts across sectors.
Areas that impact on the lives of older people such as age and gender discrimination, elder abuse, financial protection, health outcomes and the systems that support them are important to Dr. Hisashi Hozumi, President of Medical Corporation Junkei-kai. Important enough that he has recently established a new NGO in Akita, Japan.
"Friends of IFA (FOIFA) Japan, has an important role as a bridge builder between Japan and the world. FOIFA Japan will also be an information hub, reporting on issues and developments across the globe, to the people and governments of Japan, by linking with the world-wide network of the IFA", Dr Hozumi said.
FOIFA Japan will also report on the Japanese approach to meeting the needs of one of the world's most rapidly growing ageing societies through its own publications an website. FOIFA Japan is also very keen to build its networks internationally and welcomes contact from the aged care sectors across the world.
