| | From Making Cabinets to Making Millions:
| How Harrison Ford Grew into a Star Personal Growth Lessons
As a college junior, Harrison Ford decided to take a drama course in the hopes of meeting girls. Sure enough, a love affair ensued, only not of the variety Ford had envisioned. Rather than falling for a beautiful woman, he fell in love with acting.
Like so many aspiring actors before and after him, Ford traveled to Los Angeles in the hopes of launching a career in Hollywood. However, he found the industry difficult to enter. While he was hired for acting jobs, he appeared only in small, often unaccredited roles and seldom received a speaking part.
After five or six years, Harrison Ford was tired of performing in obscurity and in need of more steady income to support his family. Having ability as a craftsman, he took up carpentry. He worked as a stagehand for rock group, The Doors, and did odd jobs for many of the people he had met while acting in Los Angeles. One day, a man named George hired him to build cabinets. While making the cabinets Ford became acquainted with his customer who turned out to be movie director, George Lucas. Upon learning that Ford was an actor, Lucas gave him the opportunity to audition for a role in his upcoming film American Graffiti. Ford won the part, a prominent supporting role and his biggest performance to date.

The
Canadian Innovator | Greetings!
Halloween is just around the corner and we are ready to fill your bags with goodies.
Richard and I have spoken with a number of accountants over the past month on adding Business Advisory as one of your core services. It is interesting to note that many of you are already doing it in some fashion. The downside that many of you have pointed out to us is that one, you are not getting paid for it, two, you have no process and three, you do not have the time to commit to it.
We strongly suggest that you take a serious look at this core service as your clients want this from you. Let's address the issues:
1. Payment - Offer it as a service, provide an engagement letter
2. Process - There are a number of software applications available to get you started. I.e. Profit Driver, ProfitCents, and BStar, coming to Canada very shortly.
3. Time- How do you create more time for this service? To be competitive in this area you must allocate about twenty percent of you time to this area. The use of technology is key to creating time. Double monitors, Scanners, Cloud Technology, Voice Recognition, Outsourcing. This fall we are offering a number of free webinars on technology to improve the efficiency of your practice.
We have a new Motivational movie from Simple Truths this month, entitled

 | The Cloud Levels The Playing Field
Denise Deveau, Financial Post October 18, 2010

Sam Vassa says if it wasn't for cloud computing, he wouldn't be in the payroll services business. The chief executive of PaymentEvolution in Toronto, has found a way to offer small and medium-sized businesses enterprise-class services at an affordable monthly rate: an average $18 a month and free for businesses with five employees or less.
"The cloud is simply a way to let people access critical applications to run their business through a Web browser from anywhere," he says. "There is no reason small businesses can't have the same tools as larger organizations." Running servers and applications can be an expensive proposition for many businesses, he adds. "What cloud does is remove the burden of IT and maintaining applications so businesses can service clients and make money."
Cloud services can also relieve the security headaches that come with managing in-house infrastructure. "It can be more secure than having an in-house infrastructure, because cloud services are professionally managed and hosted," Mr. Vassa says, "Providers end up putting a tremendous amount of security that businesses simply couldn't afford on their own, including biometric lockdowns, fire suppression systems and full replication of data at multiple data centres."
Subscribing to PaymentEvolution cloud services has allowed Todd Trowbridge, principal at Trowbridge Professional Corp. Chartered Accountants in Toronto, to expand significantly since he and two partners founded the firm in 2002. "We decided when we started that we would take advantage of new technologies. Since then we've grown to 22 people."
While the company had in-house systems, Mr. Trowbridge says processes were somewhat primitive in the beginning.

If your firm provides Payroll Services, you need to take at look at this company!
If your firm doesn't provide Payroll Services, you need to take at look at this company!
After seeing the article above on Cloud services and a new service that Todd Trowbridge is using, we checked out Payment Evolution and visited their offices for an in-depth demonstration of the services, their organization and their vision. We came away impressed.

2020 Members have been early adopters of technology and new services. We have asked a number of technological firms to do webinars on their respective software. This is in response to the number of individuals who requested more information on voice recognition, portals, cloud computing, workflow and outsourcing, especially bookkeeping. There will also be a number of compliance oriented webinars to keep you up to date on the most recent updates in various areas plus some Excel How-to's. Take a moment and review our Professional Development Webinar offerings. Make sure you contact us to register.
We, along with a large number of our members, are also going to be off to Las Vegas for the Accounting Today Conference on November 17-18. (spots still available!!) Hope to see you there.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact me at peggy.tyers@2020canada.ca .
