Bookkeeping Express
Gordon Holley, CA, out of Vancouver, BC, is an entrepreneur at heart. Whether he's worked as a CFO
advising start-ups, a law firm COO with strategic vision, or a partner
in a CA firm, Gordon has always had a keen eye for business opportunities. Now, as President and CEO at Bookkeeping Express, he
brings hard-won experience and insight from more than 20 years in
accounting and financial services to his own bookkeeping franchise
company.
While working as a Chartered Accountant in small, mid-sized and "Big 4"
CA firms, Gordon got an insider's look at how bookkeeping affects both
accountants and small business owners. He discovered that accounting
firms were not optimized for bookkeeping tasks, which often fell to
inexperienced students. He also watched small businesses waste money as
accountants spent hours cleaning up poorly executed bookkeeping work.
Gordon's answer is Bookkeeping Express, where his accounting expertise
and passion for helping small businesses come together.

As a business owner, Gordon can now focus on the work he enjoys the
most, like connecting with small business owners and accountants, and
helping other bookkeepers grow their own successful businesses.

The
Canadian Innovator |
Greetings!
It is hard for any one individual to keep pace with all the
new technology being developed to improve the efficiency of a practice or
simply to protect documents and their contents. Over the past several months I
have attended several conferences and presentations on technology. The
recurring theme is document management, portals and cloud computing. What is
really exciting is to see how many members of 2020 Canada embrace technology
and are prepared to test out the proposed technology.
There are many levels of document management. We have been
working and playing with the Fujitsu ScanSnap 1500 Deluxe over the past month.
We are so excited about its capabilities both for you as accountants and for
your clients to make their lives easier.
We had a brief meeting with John Sully of Quick Portals this
morning. He was quite excited about the number of accountants who stopped by
his booth at the 2020 Canada conference, but more importantly by the number of
accountants who actually purchased the portal technology. This proves in my
mind, once again, that 2020 Canada members are ahead of the curve in technology
and we could not be more proud of the accountants we serve.

Technical Perspective - Cash Flow Statement - An Entrepreneurial Perspective
|
In this second article, Don Nilson, West Vancouver, looks at the Cash Flow Statement.
For us "old-timers," the cash flow
statement has had a fairly active history in the handbook. Over the years it
has been known euphemistically as the "Where Got Where Gone," and properly as
the Statement of Sources and Uses, the Statement of Sources and Applications,
the Statement of Changes in Financial Position and, lately, the Statement of
Cash Flows. Previously it focused on net working capital, but it has evolved to
instead focus on cash or cash equivalents. The categorical concept of
operating, investing and financing subheadings was introduced in 1987.
While we produce handbook-style cash flow
statements in the official financial statement package, we produce a modified
version for separate reporting to our entrepreneurial clients. This includes a
fourth subcategory, which we call "shareholder activities." At first, this
merely shows the reporting of dividend payments and shareholder loan activity
from other places on the statement to the shareholder section.

Managing Different Generations Marc Belaiche, CA TorontoJobs.ca
|
Remember the last time the family gathered around the table
for a special occasion? How long did it take before you had Grandpa, the
Veteran, saying how easy it is for young people today? Next thing you know Mom,
the Baby Boomer, is setting up the "kiddy" table for the, much too old for
kiddy table, daughter, the Generation X'er. There's bound to be some tension
forming within the family now! If this has happened to you don't think you are
alone. This situation is likely due to generational differences we are faced
with on a daily basis not only in the home but at work as well.
This is the first time in history that we have had four
different generations working side-by-side in the workplace. In order to understand what a manager in this
type of situation must do to keep communication and working relationships flowing
smoothly, let's take a closer look at these four generations and learn the
differences in work ethics, styles, values, etc...

Technology Update Cloud Computing
|
This interesting article on Cloud Computing - Battle of the Clouds - appeared in The Economist on Oct. 17. In talking with accounting firms across the country, some are currently implementing this. A must read for those thinking about cloud computing.
THERE is nothing the computer industry likes better than a big new
idea-followed by a big fight, as different
firms compete to exploit it.
"Cloud computing" is the latest example, and companies large
and small are already joining the fray. The
idea is that computing will increasingly be delivered as a service,
over the internet, from vast warehouses of shared machines. Documents, e-mails
and other data will be stored online, or
"in the cloud", making them accessible from any pc or mobile device. Many things
work this way already, from e-mail and
photo albums to calendars and shared documents. This represents a big
shift. If you store more and more things
online, and access more and more software through an ordinary web
browser, it suddenly matters much less what sort
of computer you have, and what kind of software it is running. Click here for the entire article. |
Our webinars are going full tilt, with great speakers and what
we believe are interesting topics. If you have not completed your structured PD requirements for this year now is a good time to register for the remaining webinars or Member's Morning.
We don't know
which way to turn in our PD courses. Do we provide more compliance, and tax
updates, as that is the area you are all most comfortable
with, or do we continue with our direction, to provide you with
information that broadens your knowledge and helps you in your practice
management and growth. Do we continue with webinars or do only live
seminars?
You tell us. We have less then 10 webinars remaining
in this year's series, and we will begin planning for 2010 in January
as you begin to cocoon yourselves in your tax work. Drop us a line as
to what you would like to see from 2020 next year, if you want to see
anything at all. If we aren't providing you with what you want, let us
know what thay may be and we'll try to deliver it.
Sincerely,
Peggy Tyers 2020 Canada
