Breaking news!

JFCS is proud to announce through its affiliation with the
Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies
(AJFCA) a new unprecendented relationship with one of the nation's oldest and largest insurance and long-term care carriers.  After reviewing the overwhelming supportive impact that JFCS agencies and AJFCA have on communities across the United States, this company has agreed to offer a special discount on long-term care insurance policies to members and affiliates of AJFCA.  This special association discount is in addition to the existing lower premium rates and discounts available to spouses/partners and people in better-than-average health.  Read more...

Click on the links below for more information about the benefits of long-term care insurance in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format:
  • As an affiliate of AJFCA, you are eligible to receive a 5% discount on your long-term care policy in addition to any other discounts and reductions you might be eligible for.  Click here for more information.
  • Studies suggest that up to 80% of all informal care is provided by family members.  Wouldn't it be nice to own a long-term care insurance policy that will allow the flexibility to pay family members for the care they provide, in addition to paying for formal care, if necessary?  Click here for more information.
  • In order to address the need for home-based long-term care, you may choose the innovative 150% Home Care Option, which directs dollars where they need to go - paying for services that a client receives at home.  Click here for more information.

Financial help is available for those dealing with cancer

Cancer can be devastating to a family's finances.  The 2nd Annual Walk 4 Family & Friends With Cancer will raise funds for cancer patients who have financial problems.  The 4-mile walk is slated for April 17th, beginning at 8:00 AM at Connolly Park on Centennial Boulevard in Voorhees, NJ.

JFCS is honored to have been selected as one of two organizations to receive the proceeds from the walk, along with the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.  Last year, this grassroots event, founded by Lisa and David Forman, raised over $25,000 from 500 registered walkers, and many more are expected this year.  Hot off the presses!  An anonymous donor has agreed to match proceeds raised by the walk, up to $50,000, which gives participants a wonderful opportunity to increase the impact of their gift.

Click here for more information, including how to register for the walk and how to make a donation.  Even if you are unable to walk that day, you can still participate by donating to this worthy cause!

Last year's Walk 4 Family & Friends With Cancer

Proceeds from the walk will be used to support our new Cancer Emergency Support Fund, which will offer direct financial assistance to residents of South Jersey (regardless of religious or ethnic denomination) looking for help with non-medical expenses related to their cancer diagnosis.  Funds will be quickly and efficiently delivered, so that patients and their families can focus on the more important challenge of getting well.  At a time when nonprofit organizations are experiencing shrinking revenue streams, this is an incredible opportunity for JFCS to raise funds to help cancer patients with their finances.  JFCS financial assistance covers such expenses as rent, transportation, utilities, babysitting, and more.

For more information about our Financial Assistance for Cancer Patients Program, contact Margie by email at cancersupport@jfedsnj.org or call 856-424-1333, ext. 163.
Things are still tough out there!

Despite all the reports you read about the improving economy, our community continues to be affected by these troubled times, and many are still suffering.  There are still plenty of needs, as evidenced by the fact that in the first quarter of fiscal year 2010, we have already given out more than what we budgeted for financial assistance for the entire year!  Plus, we have seen an increase in the number of requests for food over the last four months.

The JFCS Food Pantry has been renamed the Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantry in honor of their generous gift to help sustain the food pantry.  Thank you, Betsy, Peter, and family!

JFCS is helping people find jobs in a difficult economy

JFCS is doing more than ever to help get people back to work in this difficult economy!  In addition to our upcoming free Back to Work Support Group, starting April 15th, and ongoing Job Support Networking Group, on April 13th, we recently launched a new section on our website called the Career Center Forum.  This helps to empower individuals in finding employment by offering them the opportunity to post a description of the type of job they are seeking, as well as their qualifications.  Employers in the community are encouraged to browse through the postings in the hope that a match will be made.  This service will be heavily promoted through ads in the Jewish Community Voice and articles in the media, but you can help us spread the word to your friends and neighbors.

Interested individuals must be 18 years or older to use this service and should submit their posts by email to careercenter@jfedsnj.org.  Posts will remain on our website for 30 days.  If you are an employer in our community, be sure to check it out!
Multi-Year Giving can make giving a littler easier

If you are considering increasing your commitment to JFCS, Multi-Year Giving can spread out a substantial pledge into affordable payments.  A special thank you goes to Marilyn Krupnick for her very generous planned multi-year gift to JFCS!  A JFCS senior services client, she is an excellent example of Multi-Year Giving.  Her pledge to JFCS involves a four-year commitment of funds.  She made her gift in honor of Judi Shoulson, a nurse at JFCS who currently provides services to her and who provided her and her late husband David with compassionate and devoted care for many years, as well as in honor of her daughter, Judith Krupnick.

Explaining why she wants to make such an extraordinary commitment to JFCS, Mrs. Krupnick said, "I cannot say enough about the quality of services I receive from JFCS, and it is my pleasure to give back."
ShopRite stores select JFCS to receive funds for food pantry

JFCS is honored to have been selected by the ShopRites of Marlton and Evesham Road to receive financial awards, which will be used to help pay for food to stock the Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantry at JFCS.  General Mills awarded funds to the ShopRite Partners in Caring Program which supports over 1,400 hunger-fighting charities and 22 regional food banks.  We consider ourselves very fortunate to have been selected by both these stores as their designated charity.  At special ceremonies two ShopRite associates, selected to represent their stores on a special-edition "Leading the Way to End Hunger" Cheerios box, were also honored.

JFCS is also the recipient of a grant from the ShopRite Partners in Caring Program.  The Marlton, Evesham Road, and Mount Laurel stores selected us as their charity of choice, and the designated funds are being held in an account with the Food Bank of South Jersey so we can purchase more food for our food pantry.  As more and more people find themselves in desperate need of food, we are most appreciative to ShopRite for their continued support and partnership in helping to end hunger and malnutrition in Southern New Jersey.

Jewish Recovery and Wellness Day a big success!

Addictions counselor Abby Michaeleski led a workshop on the healing powers of Jewish drumming and chanting, and Laura Markowitz led another on yoga and meditation at the Jewish Recovery and Wellness seminar held on March 7th.  Rabbi Yaacov Kravitz, a psychologist specializing in spiritual and recovery work, was the keynote speaker for the event, geared to Jewish addicts and their families and friends.  Other workshops included sessions for people in recovery as well as their families, a Jewish healing service, and a sale on books about recovery.  The event, spearheaded by Meira, JFCS Addictions Specialist, drew 45 people from as far away as New York, North Jersey, and Allentown.

JFCS gift cards make a great Mother's Day gift

Just in time for Mother's Day, you can now purchase Caring For You gift cards in different denominations which entitle the bearer to a variety of services from JFCS.

These cards are a thoughtful and practical gift for the "woman on the go", who is looking for convenience and help with her daily life.  A gift card for Meals-on-Wheels is an option that is sure to be appreciated, as these offer an assortment of delicious and healthful dairy, meat, and vegetarian entrees, all prepared by Betty the Caterer and kosher certified.  The meals come frozen and are clearly labeled and sealed in microwaveable containers.  They are moderately priced at $6 per meal, and can be arranged for delivery to most areas in Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties, or for pick-up at the JCC or Saltzman House.  Not only can these meals be a godsend to individuals who are recuperating from illness or are otherwise unable to cook for themselves - but think about all those active moms who would be thrilled to have a prepared nutritious meal all ready for their family, after carpooling, soccer games, and errands.  This is truly a unique Mother's Day gift idea!

Caring For You gift cards can also be redeemed for a variety of in-home services for seniors who are currently or will be enrolled in the JFCS Senior Services Program.  These can be used for such services as geriatric care management (including assessments and consultations), medication monitoring, housekeeping, personal care, respite and companion care, transportation, and more.  Assessments and consultations are available at half the cost charged by private care managers.  This card offers a wonderful opportunity to assist your loved one who may benefit from that extra measure of support and TLC to live safely and independently in his or her own home.  And the sense of security and support it can provide is priceless!

For more information about Caring For You gift cards and how to purchase them, contact Gail by email at seniorservices@jfedsnj.org or call 856-424-1333, ext. 181.  And just think...the proceeds from every purchase of a gift card embrace and support the programs and services of JFCS, which is perhaps the greatest gift of all!
There's always so much going on at JFCS, and I hope you enjoyed reading about all of our activities, programs, and events!  Remember, you can get more frequent updates on our website, and on Facebook and Twitter.  Looking forward to seeing you at Stepping Out With JFCS!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Dubrow Weiss
