Domestic Violence Awareness Month
and
Disability Mentoring Day

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we have expanded the Project S.A.R.A.H. section of our website to include more details about the program, as well as general information about domestic violence and resources for victims and their loved ones.

One of the goals of this program is to raise awareness of the fact that domestic abuse occurs in all communities, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.

JFCS offers counseling, support groups, resource information, and other forms of assistance to victims of domestic abuse and their families.  We are also strong supporters of preventative education and other forms of community outreach

Some additional information and resources:
Anyone who feels they need services should call 856-778-7775 and ask for "Sarah".  All calls are strictly confidential.

Teen Workshops -
Building Healthy Relationships

Over the past four years, JFCS has presented Building Healthy Relationships workshops to over 5,000 students at 9 area high schools and middle schools.  We believe that building healthy relationships and the prevention of dating abuse is the basis for developing positive lifelong relationships.

For more information about this program, please call Lisa at 856-778-7775.

October is National Disability Employment
Awareness Month

JFCS will once again be partnering with other disability organizations throughout the state to bring Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) to Southern New Jersey on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.

DMD is a national program that promotes career development for students with disabilities by visiting a local employer to tour and learn more about their business.  The national DMD began in 1999 as a program to increase the profile of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is celebrated every October.

Last year, JFCS arranged for approximately 75 students to visit 8 employer locations in Southern New Jersey.  This year, JFCS will again be a local DMD coordinator and we are looking for businesses and organizations to participate by opening their doors to students with disabilities and arranging for them to observe for a few hours.

For more information about participating in this special day as an employer please contact Barbara at 856-424-1333 or email specialneeds@jfedsnj.org.
