A computer newsletter for translation professionals

Special Edition
1. What's Up?

I've done all kinds of things in the past with this newsletter come the end of the year: from Top Ten lists to predictions of things to come in translation technology to simply ignoring the calendar and carrying on as usual.

In fact, though, the end of the year -- or, in our case, the end of the decade -- lends itself to pondering the past and wondering about the future. (For more on the pondering-and-wondering theme, see my article in the current Translation Journal.)

So to mark this transition into a new decade, I decided to do something a little different this time. I decided that it might be a good idea to ask the folks whose products you always read about in my newsletter, the translation tool vendors, what they think about the past year/decade and what they expect (and hope for) from the next year/decade.

I can think of a lot of questions for them, but I realized that yours might be better and much more interesting. So here's my suggestion: Send me some of those burning questions before Christmas. I will pick the two or three most interesting or intriguing to pass on to the tool vendors. They will have time to think about them over the holidays so they can be published in a newsletter edition right before New Year's Day. (I will also compile the other questions and send those in a separate document to the tool vendors).

Here are a few things that I would ask of you: Please refrain from asking any specific product-related questions or using this as a sounding board to voice frustration about the tools (there are plenty of other opportunities for that). Instead, let's use this opportunity to learn something from the vendors about where they see technology in our industry headed.

You can send your messages to me by simply replying to this email.

Merry Christmas!

P.S. In case you still need a Christmas present for that extra-special translator friend, I'll be glad to send him or her The Translator's Tool Box ebook in your name.
