And I think, perhaps, maybe I did him some good.

finally, he said:
"This is really great stuff!
And I guess the old alphabet
ISN'T enough!"

the letters he uses are something to see!
Most people still stop at the Z...
But not HE!
Now, I don't know how familiar you are with Dr. Seuss, the great
children's magician of the English language -- I personally find it hard to
believe that someone could know his work and not love it. I thought that I knew
all of Dr. Seuss' books until Geoff Koby of Kent State pointed me to the
above-quoted On Beyond Zebra, a wonderful source for invented characters.
(Of course, when Geoff realized that I would actually use it in my Love story of characters with character series, he was quick to disclaim "ownership" and
add that "as a linguist, I find his letters amusing but not meaningful or
useful." ;-))
Be that as it may, some of the characters are very clever, such as this one. Though that first character is a scanned image from the book, this one
was actually entered via a Unicode font ("Constructium").
Some Seuss enthusiasts took it upon themselves to use the Unicode Private Use
Area of Unicode to assign places for the crazy Dr. Seuss characters. They may
not have quite the snazz of Dr. Seuss' originals, but it's remarkable
nevertheless that you can write these characters with Unicode.
And Jeromobot? Well, it turned out that he did have a brother, a remarkably
identical twin, who came into being after the first twin was snatched away by
the aging Hungarian flower girl. Of course, the occasion was marked with birthday
parties. This and other events in and around Jülich, Germany, where we spent
the last weekend, are documented here.

1. Search for File Names
as Flash Would

. . . that's Flash like the super hero, of
course, not Flash as in Flash drive!
Here's a helpful hint: Never, ever try this as a
pick-up line: "Hey, did you know that I'm running Vista!" Not
good -- it won't make you many friends. Not even if the one you are addressing
is running Vista her- or himself. Who would ever admit to anything as
vile as that?!
I noticed that helpful fact this week when I took my
Windows Vista desktop machine into a shop to spruce it up a bit. (Mind you,
I don't use that machine to do actual productive work, just for testing
purposes and so that I can write half-way intelligently about Vista.)
When I picked it up I made the mistake of asking the technician with the sour
face whether he also is less than enthusiastic about Vista. After
glaring at me for about half a minute, he informed me that neither he nor
anyone else he knew in the whole wide world is enthusiastic about it. (Technicians
with sour faces DO seem to have lots of acquaintances!) It's a strange thing
with Vista. Now that Google has taken over a lot of Microsoft's
bad-boy image, everyone still seems to agree to hate Microsoft for at
least one last thing, regardless of its merits: Vista.
In my opinion, the truth is that Vista has some
issues -- particularly with compatibility (which really is not much of an issue
anymore), sluggishness on computers that are not appropriately equipped, and
tedious security mechanisms (which also have been improved in the latest Vista
incarnations).
But at the same time, Vista has some very
strong points: It is perfect for translators because it allows us to run its Ultimate
edition in its various language user interfaces, and it has some very nice and
fast search mechanisms by using advanced indexing.
And now we've arrived where I wanted to get in the
first place. (Remember: "Flash!")
In one of the last few editions of the Windows Secret newsletter, there was an
interesting article about a super-tiny, super-fast, and super-non-obstructive
utility called Everything. Here is what
the article said:
There are dozens of utilities that
allow you to find files quickly on your hard drive by searching on the file
name. Most of these programs share a common weakness: they create large index
files that eat up your hard disk space. Worse, the maintenance of these big
index files can slow down your PC. The Everything file-search program
doesn't suffer this problem. The index files that Everything creates are
very small -- just a few megabytes. Furthermore, the program updates these
indexes so quickly you won't even notice it. Yet this doesn't affect Everything's
search performance. The tool can find a file anywhere on your drive nearly
instantaneously.
Everything
achieves this near-miracle by employing a clever trick. Rather than building
totally self-contained search indexes from scratch, it leverages the
information already contained within the NT file system (NTFS).
The results are spectacular. Everything
can index a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 (about 20,000 files) in
about one second. Yet the index files it creates are a tiny 3MB to 5MB.
Blink and you'll miss seeing it work.
It's all true. I am not really sure how it's possible,
but indexing the names of all my files and folders -- I had more than 200,000
-- took less than three seconds. Once indexed, they are all listed in Everything's
main application window where you can look for any part of the name by typing it
into a search box (using wildcards or not) and the results are displayed
instantaneously. You can search your complete hard drive (that's where I had
the 200,000 files) or on any folder or folder group in Windows Explorer
-- just right-click and select Search Everything.
We all know that the search feature in Windows XP
is painfully slow, so there is obviously not even the chance of comparing Everything
to XP, but even against Vista it wins hands-down, opening the
possibility to disable the integrated, memory-eating search feature in Vista
(under Control Panel and Indexing Options) unless you are also
interested in looking for content within files.

2. PDF-to-Word Multilingual
or Not?

In the last newsletter I mentioned the new online-based PDF-to-Word application, which
works surprisingly fast and accurately. After I sent the newsletter out, however,
I was embarrassed to notice that I had not looked into its multilingual capabilities,
a shortcoming that was also pointed out by Claude Simard. Well, I am glad to report
that it is mind-bogglingly multilingual.
On PDF-to-Word's company blog it says
Multi-language text support.
Convert all Unicode-based text, in any LTR (left-to-right written) language.
Yeah, right, I thought. Show me the goods! So I
converted a PDF file containing Chinese, Russian, Swedish, and Spanish text,
and it did so beautifully. Wow, I thought, that's not bad, but I know where to
prove them wrong: Amharic -- no way they can do that right (many of you
remember that I wrote about the poor Amharic support in many tools). But what
can I say? It converted it beautifully. Now, you can't convert a non-Unicode exotic-language
font, and image-based PDFs (including scanned files) also don't work, but otherwise
it looks quite powerful.

3.
The Keyboard Cripple
Disease (Premium Edition)

I wonder more and more whether the keyboard cripple disease (KCD)
is mostly an American affair, but it's more likely something that potentially
affects any translator who lives in a non-native country. The typical preconditions
are that he or she purchased a computer in the country where he or she learned
to type (more effectively) and now uses it to translate into his or her native
language. The symptoms are an enormous waste of time finding and using
so-called "shortcuts" to enter special characters of the native
target language. These "shortcuts" are in fact completely
imaginary and can lead to serious psychoses if the patient discovers how many
hours, days, and weeks he or she has wasted entering four-digit codes for one character,
employing extreme finger gymnastics to reach humanly impossible key
combinations, and/or finding himself or herself completely stranded on
computers or applications that are not the familiar and the preferred.
(Maybe I should add medical translation to my repertoire of translation
expertise!)
Really, there is hardly anything that gets me more enraged than the way
many of us cripple ourselves with keyboards. In my opinion, there are three things
that we need to be able to do as we enter text (and this does not include CJK
translators):
- There should
not be more than one keyboard stroke per entered character.
- Whatever method
we use has to work identically in all applications.
- Whatever method
we use needs to be able to be replicated on any other standard computer
without installing third-party applications.
All these criteria sound like no-brainers to me, since they afford
portability between apps and computers as well as ease of work. But it's far
from the reality for many of us. Let's look at all the crazy methods we use (I
use a classification that you can find in a slightly altered way in my book):
- The archaic
way: The Character Map. You can either start this under Start>
(All) Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Character Map, or
through a slightly modified version within Word or many other
programs from within an application. Here you can find all the supported
symbols and characters for each individual font to select and paste into
your text. This is a great choice for the very casual foreign language
user, but certainly not for the professional translator -- and I admit
that there are probably very few professional translators who work that
way.
- The Word-centric
way: MS Word provides a number of keyboard shortcuts to
enter special characters, such as CTRL+SHIFT+@ followed by a for å.
You can find a full list of these on Microsoft's website or in your Word help system. Sounds great at first, but
you still need two keys to get to your special characters and, even worse,
once you leave Word you're lost. (The other Word-centric
way, where you customize shortcuts within Word, is even worse
because you're not only lost outside of Word, but also on any
computer other than your own since these customized shortcuts are stored
on your computer only.)
- The macro way: There are many programs
that allow you to automate other many-step-processes into one keyboard
shortcut. A well-known example for special-character purposes is the oddly
named AllChars, which provides
a large number of preconfigured keyboard shortcuts for special characters (that
all follow the pattern Ctrl [release!] + one key + second key) and also
allows you to enter more individual ones. I probably don't have to explain
why this is not a good way to go about doing things in your main language
(number of keyboard strokes, being lost without it), but still this is a good
program when you have to write short texts in a third or fourth language.
- The programmer's way: There are many programs out there that allow you to
reprogram any (virtual) keyboard that Windows offers you in the standard
installation. These are so-called mapping programs, with the most well-known
probably being the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator or MSKLC, a tool that Microsoft supplies for
free. It works great, though it's a little complicated, and it allows you to
put all kinds of fancy new key assignments on your keyboard. This allows you to
take an existing language-specific keyboard, change some settings, and save
that new keyboard as a customized keyboard for your language. Or you can create
a new keyboard from scratch. What's wrong with it? Your fingers will wreak havoc
with you once you leave your computer.
- The work-out
way, aka the ANSI code: This poor but unbelievably popular way among
translators consists or four (4!) keystrokes for one character. To
activate this, make sure that you have your NUM LOCK key enabled (the
small keypad on the right of your keyboard), and type the number of that
character on the small keypad as you press the ALT key. The
above-mentioned å has the key
combination 0228. Phew! This is a
great way to train your memory to remember all kinds of code and exercise
your finger muscles, but certainly not conducive to a productive work
environment!
So, lots of bad ways to go about entering text -- what are the good
ways? (I very consciously do not even mention speech recognition, which in many
ways might be superior to any keyboard-based entering of text.)
In my opinion there are only two viable options, of which the most
relevant is the installation of the correct keyboard for the respective target language.
Most of you know that Windows supports a large number of virtual
keyboards (which have no relationship to the printed letters on your physical
keyboard) that are very easy to install. Select
- Start>
Settings> Control Panel> Keyboard> Language (Windows 9x)
- Start>
Settings> Control Panel> Input Locales> Change (Windows 2000)
- Start>
Control Panel> Regional and Language Options> Languages> Details (Windows XP)
- Start>
Control Panel> Regional and Language Options> Keyboards and
Languages> Change keyboards (Windows Vista -- for Vista and XP this
follows the Classic View in the Control Panel)
and once you are at the dialog to install additional keyboards, select Add
and define which additional languages and/or keyboards you would like to have
installed on your system. Once you select OK, the new keyboard will show
up in the list of installed keyboards.
After you leave this dialog, you will have a little language icon
displayed on your task bar which displays your currently selected languages and
allows you to switch between the different keyboards.
This is all quite easy. The difficult thing now is learning the new
layout of the new keyboard. It might be difficult to find an actual physical
keyboard for that language in your location -- but that can be also a real
advantage because then you won't rely on watching your fingers as you type or
be hampered once you don't have access to your special keyboard.
As a training aid, it might be quite helpful to have the On-Screen
Keyboard of your current keyboard displayed. You can launch that (only in XP
and Vista) under Start> Programs> Accessories>
Accessibility> On-Screen Keyboard (Vista: Start>
Programs> Accessories> Ease of Access> On-Screen Keyboard.)
And if you complain about the time it takes you to retrain your fingers,
think of the many hours that you will save in the long run.
Oh, I mentioned that there are two good keyboard options. The other is
probably the US-International keyboard, which is relevant for anyone who
is determined to have the English keyboard be the main staple and at the same
time access a good number of important international characters by pressing the
right ALT key (RightAlt + w makes å).
Aside from the keys that can be accessed like
this, you can also "create" international characters with a
combination of a "diacritical mark" (a so-called "dead
key") followed by a letter: (" + a = ä; ' + a = á; ' + c = ç; ` + a = à; ^ + a = â; ~ + n = ñ). However, this is a violation of one of our rules, so
you'll end up happier with a real (albeit virtual) native keyboard.

New Trados Version

The folks from SDL are
on a "road show" right now introducing the new version of Trados.
And that's probably a good idea: It is such a completely different tool that
many users may feel it is just as easy to switch to a whole new TEnT than to upgrade
to the new version of Trados. All this is really great for our industry:
Not only is the new version of Trados superior to the old, but, as we've
discussed in previous issues, we find ourselves in an exciting hour-zero
situation where cards are being shuffled and given out anew as far as the
market position of the different tools.
There is one other thing
that has caused a bit of excitement on the Trados road show, and there
seems to be some room here for changing the minds of the folks who are
responsible at Trados. Apparently there are some at Trados who
would like to limit the Freelance edition of the new version of Trados
to being installed on one machine -- rather then allowing the installation on a
desktop and laptop so that folks can work as they travel (which, as many
translators are also interpreters, is the norm rather than the exception). Surely
no one would argue with a restriction against the two installations being used
simultaneously in one network, but it would be very helpful to continue the old
policy of two parallel installations. So call your congress SDL man and politely explain your opposition
to this new possible policy.
I could certainly
foresee that if the policy were to be implemented, the newly shuffled cards might
not be so fortuitous for SDL after all.
