Greetings!
Happy New Year to all. Here is the first issue of 2011 of the Pan IIT USA Newsletter filled with achievements and wonderful news about our fellow IIT alumni in the U.S. Check out our coverage of two of our very own prominent U.S.-based alumni who are recent recipients of India's highest honor: the Padma Shri.
U.S. News & World Report's 2010 Survey lists five of our Institutes in the world's top 100 Engineering Uniersities. Chapters across the states are hosting professional and social events, building the IIT Alumni spirit and helping mentor younger generations. The next IIT Global Conference in New York city is also coming up soon. Mark your calendars to attend IIT Global Forum in New york City in July. We look forward to seeing you all.

IITB alum Gautum Advani and IITK Alum Anil Bhandari are the co-chairs of the Forum. The Forum is themed "IIT Alumni Make a Better World" and promises to bring together a diverse group of industry leaders and academicians from around the world to provide panel discussions on: "The Current Environment in India and the U.S," and "Future Opportunities in the U.S., Indian, and Global Arenas." The emphasis will be on providing insights to IIT alumni for enhancing bilateral trade and exchange between the U.S., India and the rest of the world. The plenary sessions and panel sessions will touch upon topics such as: Finance, Energy, Technology & Mobile Media, Life Sciences, Social & Digital Media, Consumer Products, Education, Entrepreneurship, Consulting, and Real Estate. |

CSIS Establishes Wadhwani Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies |
On January 5, 2011, The Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) announced the establishment of the Wadhwani Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies made possible by the generous support of CSIS Trustee and Symphony Technology Group CEO Dr. Romesh Wadhwani, an IIT Bombay alum.
Karl F. Inderfurth, a former assistant secretary of state for South Asian affairs will serve as the inaugural chair holder. "Dr. Wadhwani's generosity, and Karl F. Inderfurth's work as the Wadhwani Chair, will contribute to critical policymaking efforts to build a secure and sustainable future for the [U.S.-India] relationship, commented John Hamre, CSIS president and CEO.
"The importance of the strategic partnership between the U.S. and India and the changing dynamic in both counties requires us to take policy thought leadership to the next level," said Dr. Wadhwani. In 2008, when Wadhwani donated $5 million to IIT Bombay, he said, "I owe my success in life to the superior education I received from IIT Bombay." |
| Victor Menezes Convention Centre at IIT Bombay - a way to say Thank you! |
 On January 8, 2011, Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resources and Development, unveiled the inaugural plaque at the brand new Victor Menezes Convention Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. "I received a priceless education from IIT Bombay and this is a small way to say thank you," said Menezes.
He noted, "I hope the Convention Centre will help support the exchange of ideas and intellectual advancement at IIT Bombay." Menezes, retired Senior Vice Chairman of Citigroup, Inc., contributed $3 million towards the construction of the Convention Centre to the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund. Menezes himself was present for the unveiling. He joined nearly 100 alumni and family members as they gathered for their 40th reunion. The Victor Menezes Convention Centre hosts a state-of-the-art auditorium, 16 lecture halls, a VIP Lounge, and a Conference Hall.

U.S.-based IIT Alumni receive 2011 Padma Shri for Science and Engineering
|

 Dr. Mani Lal Bhaumik, IIT Kharagpur Alum and Dr Subra Suresh IIT Madras alum have been honored for their significant contributions in the field of Science and Engineering, Dr. Bhaumik, a known physicist has contributed for the development of a particular type of laser ray used for Lasik corrective eye surgery, which results in removing the need for glasses or contact lenses. Dr Suresh, who was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to be the Director of National Science Foundation (NSF), an independent federal agency in the U.S. has pioneered in the use of ''nanobiomechanics'' technology. These two were among the eight eminent personalities, chosen for distinguished service in any field, in the category of foreigners/ NRIs and PIOs. The awards will be conferred by the President of India sometime around March or April this year. |

National Science Foundation Awards Schwarzkopf Prize to IIT Alum

On January 19, 2011, Suresh V. Garimella was awarded the prestigious 2011 Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation from the National Science Foundation's Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program. The annual award recognized Garimella's research to develop advanced cooling technologies for electronics and cars - specifically his team's work to develop "two-phase microchannel heat sinks" to cool high-power electronics in electric and hybrid cars, computers and telecommunications systems.
Garimella founded the Purdue-based I/UCRC Cooling Technologies Research Center, a consortium of corporations and government laboratories working to overcome heat-generation problems in electronic systems by developing new compact cooling technologies.

IIT Delhi Alumni couple's Daughter in "Walkaway"
|

Pallavi Sharda, the daughter of IIT Dehli alums, Dr. Nalin Sharda and Dr. Herman Sharda, played Sia in the 2010 movie "Walkaway" - an Indian movie about relationships in New York City which follows four well-off male friends in various stages of matrimonial entanglement. Sia meets Vinay (Manish Dayal) not by chance - but by matchmaking arrangement and the two hit it off and decide to wed. The film is directed by Shailja Gupta. |
