Sanjai Kohli wins European Award for Making GPS a Consumer Product

Sanjai Kohli
Sanjai Kohli (Bombay, B.Tech AE 1979) has won the prestigious European Inventor Award 2010, 15 years after his invention, for making GPS a consumer product that changed the course of GPS industry.

This annual award and is given to individuals and teams whose ideas and innovations have made a tremendous impact on shaping the larger modern world and have contributed significantly to Europe's economic growth and competitiveness.  European Patent Office (EPO), along with the European Commission, recognized Sanjai Kohli's efforts for "his work on developing powerful chipsets that increase the speed and precision of GPS navigation systems."

The signal processing power was increased by a factor of 1,000 enabling weak GPS signals to be detected within milliseconds, consequently paving the way for the use of handheld GPS navigators, including cell phones, in urban spaces.  Their invention replaced the synchronous signal process with an asynchronous process scanning the whole grid in one shot, which resulted in combining information from satellites with secondary sources such as external sensors, databases and maps.

Sanjai earned his MS in System Science from Washington University in St Louis in 1981.
Government's Response on Dr. Sinha's Murder

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Thomas Perez- U.S. Asst Attorney General (AG), US Department of Justice, have written back regarding Divyendu Sinha's murder investigations under way.  Their letters are addressed to Pan IIT USA President Gunjan Bagla in response to his written representations sent to them and to several other key elected/ appointed leaders and journalists, on behalf of the IIT Alumni, urging that the crime be investigated as a hate crime.

Governor Christie has acknowledged the information shared and has asked his New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow to review it. Also, the US Dept of Justice is "closely monitoring the local efforts" and AG Thomas Perez has reassured that they will thoroughly review the results to determine whether further action is warranted.  He has assured "if the evidence shows that there is a prosecutable violation of any federal criminal civil rights statues, appropriate action will be taken".

As the newsletter readers already know that the Indian-American community was deeply saddened and outraged at the brutal killing of Indian American Dr. Divyendu Sinha (Kharagpur Computer Science 1982) who was allegedly assaulted by five teenagers at Old Bridge, New Jersey.
