Subhas Khot wins America's highest award for young scientists
|
Dr. Subhash Khot, an IITB Alumnus, Associate Professor of Computer
Science at New York University has won the Alan
T. Waterman Award for 2010. He received his doctorate in computer science from
Princeton University in 2003. He is most well known for his "Unique Games
Problem". He has made contributions to computational complexity and his work draws connections
between optimization, computer science, and mathematics. He is part of a $10 million
NSF "Expeditions in Computing" grant under which the researchers are
seeking to bridge fundamental gaps in our understanding of computational
intractability. The US Congress
established the
annual award in August 1975 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the National
Science Foundation (NSF) and to honor its first Director, Alan T.
Waterman. In addition to a medal the
award comes with a grant of $500,000 for the winner to be used for
advanced
scientific research at the institution of their choice supported by NSF. This award is the
United States' highest honorary award for scientists 35 years of age or
younger.
"Subhash Khot is a
gifted and ambitious young scientist," said NSF Director Arden L. Bement,
Jr. "He courageously tackles some of the most challenging computational
problems, all the while advancing computer security, with vast consequences for

IITans win International competition: "New York Next "
| IIT Madras students' Aashish Dattani, Vinayshankar Kulkarni and Sriram
Kalyanaraman won $20,000 award at NYC Next Idea 2009-2010 a global competition.
Announced by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the award was for the
winning entry called XEstor.
It could serve as a common interface for safely
and efficiently storing energy into large battery storage sites from any source
across New York City. The distribution
via remote sites across the five NYC boroughs into the power grid will be based
on instant demand and not on connected load. The flexible mechanism would serve
as a backup source to avert gaps in the power supply and make the grid more
reliable. The IIT team that beat two other teams from business schools in Spain and France will be offered free space
within one of the City's new business incubators for two years.

Why can't aliens land in India?
| What does it take to be a science fiction writer
in India? A riotous imagination, of course. But a background in software
engineering and the crash of the dotcom wave help too, Anil Menon will
tell you. The alum who worked for nine years at Whiz Bang Labs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania tells a
story about a beast with multiple feet.
Anil's book, "The Beast with Nine Billion Feet" was picked up by Young Zubaan
Publishers. The novel is set in 2040 AD, against the backdrop of Pune. The fact that Pune lives in the shadow of a megalopolis like Mumbai,
lends it character.
