Greetings!

IIT alumni and their families are making news in the global entertainment industry.  Anoop Desai - son of Manoj Desai of North Carolina, made it to the final 36 for the American Idol this year.

In December 2009, Bollywood will release a movie about three IIT students and their struggles, starring Aamir Khan in the lead role, see below. Bombay Distinguished Alumnus, Jag Mohan Mundra's recent movie, Shoot on Sight - a movie that deals with issues related to terrorism, has been banned in Pakistan.

IIT Alumni chapters outside India and USA are gaining momentum.  IITans in South Korea came together for the very first time on January 26th, 2009.  Chapters in Singapore, Japan, London, Canada have had recent events.

3 idiots movie posterIt will be interesting to see our exclusive IITan status being reflected and challenged in a mainstream movie. 

One of the most awaited Bollywood movies of the year is Three Idiots due to release on December 25th with a stellar cast. Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi play the roles of the students. They are supported in the movie by Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, and Mona Singh.

This movie is loosely based on IIT Delhi alum, Chetan Bhagat's 2004 best-selling novel, Five Point Someone. It tells the story of three IIT students and their struggles within the IIT system. The screenplay is written by Rajkumar Hirani and the movie is produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Houston, Texas. IIT-AGH:

IIT Alumni of Greater Houston is presenting a professional event, Globalization of Space, on Saturday, March 21, 2009 between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The speaker is Mike Coats, Director of the Johnson Space Center and Guest of Honor is the Honorable Sanjiv Arora, Consul General of India. Pasadena, California. IIT-SoCal:


IIT Alumni of Southern California collaborates with the Caltech MIT Enterprise Forum, to host a seminar entitled, Global Markets: India Opens the Door to New Opportunities, on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 starting at 8:00 am. Moderated by Pan IIT USA President Gunjan Bagla, the event features funding sources from India, a U.S. company that was acquired by Reliance of India, an American company funded by an Indian venture capitalist and an American expert on the Indian entertainment industry. Milpitas, California.  IIT-Bay Area: 

Pan IIT Bay Area is organizing a conference on Saturday, March 21st to bring together the early adopters, entrepreneurs, technologists, and minds shaping the CleanTech industry. Industry experts will lead interactive sessions on four different themes: Solar, Biofuels, Energy Storage, and Energy Management. KGP Alumnus as IYA2009 Patron
Mani Bhaumik at IYA 
An Indian-American physicist, Kharagpur Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Mani Bhaumik, has been chosen as the patron for the International Year of Astronomy  2009.

The International Astronomical Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are observing 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's telescope.

Dr Bhaumik is best known as co-inventor of the excimer laser technology which has contributed to the success of Lasik eye surgery. Dr Bhaumik lives in Beverly Hills and has been featured on the Life Styles of Rich and Famous. Dr. Bhaumik was elected by his peers to be a fellow of the American Physical Society as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers according the the IIT KGP site.

First event in South Korea


Pan IIT South Korea met with Indian Ambassador to South Korea S. R. Tayal a Kanpur Alumnus,  on 26th January, 2009

The meeting was to recognize the current IITan presence and challenges in Korea and their role. The ambassador  advised to form a strong IIT group in Korea so that the information sharing will benefit the group members. There is a greater concentration IITan presence in the southern part (Koje, Busan, Ulsan, etc) of Korea; where the ship building and heavy industries are operating.

New IIT Campuses get roots in Jaipur and Indore
Arjun Singh France to collaboarate with Jaipur

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Arjun Singh laid the foundation stone of the Indian Institute of Technology at Indore on Feb 17th 2009. IIT Indore is to be mentored by IIT Bombay.

The Union Human Resource Development Ministry had in December last year cleared France to be the collaboration partner in setting up of IIT Jaipur, which is mentored by IIT Kanpur. A number of French companies, including aeronautics giant European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company have confirmed their willingness to help develop the project, according to Jacques Valade,  ambassador-at-large in charge of decentralised co-operation in Asia.

The Government of India in its Eleventh Plan gave a major thrust to higher education.  This included setting up of 30 new Central Universities, eight new IITs, and seven new Indian Institutes of Management.
