Greetings!
We just heard that an IIT Alumnus is going to be the next governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Fellow IIT alumni are succeeding in leadership positions not only in technology but in many diverse fields all over the world. On another interesting note, LinkedIn is starting to benefit alumni. For example, 1970 Roorkee graduate Subhash Garg, wrote in to say that he reconnected with his batchmate Udayan Chatterjee after a gap of many decades using our LinkedIn Group. See below for a story from an IIT Alumnus in Zurich who recently connected to me via Linked In. We have almost 7,000 IIT alumni on our LinkedIn group, you can join today by clicking here. Make sure you fill out your educational information with specific details about your IIT degree. And send me your favorite Linked In story, finding a job, hiring a candidate, making a deal, whatever. Our newsletter list is now more than 13,000 names. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to other IIT Alumni and have them join the list. You may also change your own email address. See the bottom of this newsletter for both functions. If you don't want to receive the newsletter anymore, you may simply unsubscribe at any time with just one click.

The next global conference for IIT Alumni is set for December 19-21 on the campus of IIT Madras. It's already attracted the world's more successful steelmaker, Laxmi Mittal and the most storied automotive industry executive Carlos Ghosn (Nissan/Renault) as speakers. You should join them and bring your friends to attend.
Discounted registration is open online today, click here to sign up now. An incredibly dedicated committee of volunteers is putting this event together.
If you are travelling from Pune or Bangalore and are also nostalgic for hostel living, the committee has prepared a special package including travel and room for under Rs. 8,500.
If you are flying from overseas, now is the best time to book your travel. Fly direct into Chennai before you visit family over the holidays. (I flew in to Chennai in May and found the international airport a lot calmer than other gateways into India).

India and the Olympics
|

An IIT Alum's perspective
Beijing 2008 started with little hope, except for a few determined athletic souls who had it instilled. I could never imagine pumping my fists watching scores of '10.5 10.6 10.0 10.2 10.8' being shot by Abhinav Bindra to win the Gold, The feat not just finally broke the shackles, it rejoined the whole nation and gave a new sense of belief. Now that doubts have been cleared that India's athletes can perform in skill-based sports as well as in the slugfest in the ring or on the mat, it is a serious invitation that sports be recognized as alternative for India's youth. Having sporting icons, including a few Olympic medallists, helps raise awareness and promoting the message Sport unites, educates and brings out the best, then the ever confident and entrepreneurial youth needs to be provided ideal platform as in other fields. Initiatives and serious investments from industry are the immediate next steps, to cleanse the existing system by bringing transparency and put forth a professional setup in place to meet next goals and not falling in situation to hear about former Olympians selling off their medals. Finally to materialize the hope that India gets into double digits at London 2012 Medal Tally. Aditya Sheoran (IIT Kanpur 2002) is a Market Analyst at the International Olympic Committee's Television & Marketing Services in Zurich . The views expressed are personal, and do not necessarily reflect those of the IOC.

IIT EXPANSION PROGRAM
|
|
BHU, and seven more
In March, 2008 the Indian Cabinet approved the budgets of general locations of seven new IITs. Someone has put up a nice map on Wikipedia showing the locations of the current and new IITs. To support this unprecedented expansion, each new IIT has been paired with an existing campus and the Directors and Board of Governors of the mentor campuses are doing double duty. The three IITs of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat are mentored by the IITs of Madras, Guwahati and Bombay, respectively. The three IITs of Rajasthan, Punjab and Orissa have commenced their classes on the campuses of their mentor IITs at IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur. IT-BHU on the campus of Banaras Hindu University has long shared the JEE with the IITs. Now it has been allocated the funding to be designated an IIT, although there are some remaining snags over what it will be called. Clearly there are some teething pains in such a dramatic expansion of the system, click here for the challenges in Hyderabad.
