 Learning the Daf

Rabbi Hoff Students in Rabbi Hoff's 9th grade Talmud class had a hands-on lesson in Gemara. Together with a partner, the boys created their own daf, which included biographical descriptions of each commentator. Through their research, students gained a thorough understanding of the daf layout, the historical setting in which the Talmud was comprised and the Talmud's key contributors.

All submissions must include the first name, last name, address, grade and school, and must be completed by the fourth week of January, 2009. Length of essay is unimportant. Each contestant either must submit an essay on some modern problem and show how our sacred texts deal with the problem (e.g., "Zero Population Growth," "Environment," "Mercy Killings," "The Sanctity of Marriage," etc., etc.) or explain a difficult passage within the text (e.g., "Why Didn't Yosef Inform His Father of His Presence in Egypt?" "Did Rebecca and Jacob Lie to Yitzchok in Order to Receive the Bracha?") or write on some Jewish theme of interest.
