| Making Freedom of Mobility Come True |
This past month, Variety made a very special presentation as part of both its Bikes for Kids program, and its Heart of Variety Fund.
Gage - a 5-year-old from Helotes, has been diagnosed with Kernicterus (a nervous system injury caused by jaundice in infancy). He is deaf and has moderate cerebral palsy. But, man can he ride a bike. Johanna - an 8-year-old from San Antonio, has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder and reactive airway disease. Each received their respective bike thanks for Bikes for Kids statewide sponsor Johnson Abbotts International, local San Antonio sponsor Rico's Products Co., Inc., the bikes vendor Freedom Concepts and Variety's very own Executive Director Lance Hood.
Mr. Hood asked all his friends, family and colleagues connected to him through social networking sites FaceBook and LinkedIn to support the acquisition of these two bikes through FaceBook's Causes application and Variety's own online credit card processing system donated by Google.
By putting his money where his mouth is, Mr. Hood was able to raise over $1,000 from his network of friends and family.
