Making Freedom of Mobility Come True
Gage 1   This past month, Variety made a very special presentation as part of both its Bikes for Kids program, and its Heart of Variety Fund
Gage - a 5-year-old from Helotes, has been diagnosed with Kernicterus (a nervous system injury caused by jaundice in infancy). He is deaf and has moderate cerebral palsy. But, man Gage 2can he ride a bike.
Johanna - an 8-year-old from San Antonio, has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder and reactive airway disease.
Each received their respective bike thanks for Bikes for Kids statewide sponsor Johnson Abbotts International, local San Antonio sponsor Rico's Products Co., Inc., the bikes vendor Freedom Concepts and Variety's very own Executive Director Lance Hood.
Johanna 1   Mr. Hood asked all his friends, family and colleagues connected to him through social networking sites FaceBook and LinkedIn to support the acquisition of these two bikes through FaceBook's Causes application and Variety's own online credit card processing system donated by Google.
By putting his money where his mouth Johanna 2is, Mr. Hood was able to raise over $1,000 from his network of friends and family.
Go to Variety's YouTube Channel to see the video's of both riding their brand new bikes. (NOTE: Click on See All in the Videos section to see even more Variety of Texas videos.)
Car Enthusiasts Supporting Variety
Lincoln Tech - Pep Boys Regionals   Do you consider yourself a car enthusiast? If so, join Variety this weekend at the 1st Annual Lincoln Tech - Pep Boys Regional Car Show.
The event will be showcasing 300 to 500 classics, muscle cars, motorcycles, sports cars and so much more.
Variety is pleased to have been selected as the events charity of choice. Bring 2 can goods for Variety to distribute to facilities across the state of Texas, and receive $5 off the door price of $10. That's a fantastic value for supporting Variety.
Additionally, make a $1 donation in support of your favorite car and receive a special gift from Variety for doing so as part of Variety's Fundraising Award to be presented to the vehicle that raises the most money.
The event is this weekend (August 29-30) and runs from 10am-10pm on Saturday and 10am-8pm on Sunday. There will be door prizes galore, bands, vendor demonstrations and much more.
If you would like to assist Variety throughout the weekend by helping to spread the word about our organization, please e-mail volunteer@varietytexas.org.
Tee It Up!
2009 Golf Tournament   It is that time again. The 62nd Annual Golf Tournament and Texan of the Year Dinner will be October 6-7 at the truly breathtaking Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas at Las Colinas.
This venue is the home of the PGA Tour's annual Byron Nelson, and is a true Texas treasure.
We look forward to another great tournament as we honor Sony Pictures Releasing's own Juli Mitchell as the 2009 Texan of the Year.
