Remember the Circus
Ringling Bros.   Do you remember the first time you ever saw the big top for yourself? Did you know that the very first fundraiser ever hosted by a Variety program was circus themed? Did you know we still use nomenclature from the circus in internal Variety communications?
Well...Variety got back to its roots so to say last night, and provided an answer to the first question above to over 70 young children just last night. But, what made this group unique was who they were.
More than 50 of the children in attendance were refugees from Burma, Iraq or Sudan. Most of them have lived in our country for less than three months.
Talk about a site. The eyes bulging when the elephants came out...to the mouths open wide when the motorcycles went around their spherical cage...to the sheer site and antics of the clowns.
(Go on...admit it. They are a little freaky.)
Variety would like to thank Feld Entertainment for their assistance in making this event possible, and an upcoming event in Fort Worth in August.
Death Eaters (And All the Others) Do Some Good for Special Needs Children
Wands Ready   Variety was pleased to host a special sneak preview of the newest Harry Potter film on July 12 as a fundraiser for Variety's partner Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children.
The Morning News called it the event of the weekend due to the opportunity it presented to a select group of individuals to see it before the lines started. Well...at least we thought it would be before the lines started.
You see, the 7:00pm start time did not faze anyone. Especially when the line started forming at 1:00pm. Who knew a choice of seats was worth a six hour wait in line. But, that is exactly what it meant to some Death Eatersdedicated college students from the Denton area, and a family of four from Austin.
With support from Warner Brothers, Cinemark, The Dallas Morning News, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, not to mention the more than 450 ticket holders, over $16,000 was raised with a net of more than $12,000 going to support the special needs children that take part in Peaceable Kingdom's programs.
Good Bye Grey Sky's...Hello Blue's
Happy Days   On June 6th, Variety and the Dallas Summer Musicals welcomed in a group of inner city females to see their first live stage production. What makes this group unique is that they all lived within walking distance of the very theatre they were going to see the production.
As part of the Dallas Summer Musicals Seats for Kids program, Variety partnered with Young Life to provide the group of 25 young women with a special day capped off by seeing Happy Days.
What made the event even more memorable was the opportunity to meet Mr. Garry Marshall himself, and listen to his stories of the original show and the background of this new musical. That's the kind of thing that happens when you sit right behind him in the audience.
Variety has been promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children all across Texas for more than 70 years.
