Supporting Ike's Younger Evacuees
We have all seen the devastation caused by the storm. We have all read the reports of the damage.
But, what about the youngest of Hurricane Ike's evacuees? Variety was pleased to work with the Dallas Area Salvation Army and Red Cross to ensure that the children staying in the Dallas Convention Center's storm shelter had something to do other than think about how their lives may be changing.
With assistance from Rave Motion Pictures, Moroch, Sony Pictures Releasing and our own "emergency" supplies, Variety was able to provide over $1,000 worth of toys, board games, books and other items for the children's area of the shelter.
Variety's Executive Director, Lance Hood, stated, "It was such a joy to see the sincere appreciation from the parents and children at the shelter. Many of the individuals I spoke with were only allowed to bring essentials on the trip to Dallas. As a former resident of Galveston Island, I know how many of the children live day to day. Many of the items we presented will be cherished for years to come."
Igor is Coming
Igor   Saturday, September 22 is a very busy day around Variety. In addition to the Texas Rangers portion of our 2nd Annual Take 'em Out to a Ballgame series (more details below), Variety will be hosting a special screening of Igor as part of our Special Needs Movie Screening Series.
Due to the limited release schedule of this film, this screening will only be hosted at the Plano location of Studio Movie Grill, the theatre partner for the series.
But, the good news is that thanks to Variety and Baylor Our Children's House, all members of families with special needs children are free-of-charge.

Taking 'em Out to a Ballgame
Take 'em Out to a Ballgame    Who says baseball is over at the start of the NFL season? The 2nd Annual Take 'em Out to a Ballgame series of events is proving that September is the best time to see the game in person.
Variety will welcome over 700 individuals from more than 175 families raising children with special needs for fun family outing at the ballpark. The response from the special needs community in the GrantMetroplex was so large to our initial invitations that we expanded our initial target of 500 to ensure as many that wanted to take part in this family outing had the opportunity to do so as possible.
Last, but not least, as the saying goes...the show will must go on. Variety and the Houston Astros will still be welcoming local children, who need a good family outing more than ever, to Minute Maid Park next Wednesday.
