Getting A Drink
Lucia  Have you ever heard the saying, "It's the little things that count"? Talk to a family who has recieved support from Variety, and that is exactly what you hear them talking about...the little things. Of course the big things matter, but it is the little things that make our support so special.
When Tina applied to Variety for assistance in purchasing an electronic wheelchair for her 11-year-old daughter, Lucia, she was hoping to be able to give her daughter "the ability to participate in activities at home and in school...allow her to move from doing work at her desk to the bathroom to brush her own teeth."
Lucia has been diagnosed with spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy. Thus, making it necessary for others to assist her in all of her movements and daily activities.
As the following letter demonstrates, her pink new power chair affords her a great personal freedom...getting her own drink.

Dear Variety:

We want to express our gratitude to Variety for your assistance in getting the power chair for my daughter Lucia (Cia for short). Without your help it would not have been possible.

As a single parent of three children extra money is very hard to come by. When her insurance couldn't pay the entire cost I was so disappointed that Lucia wouldn't be able to get the power chair she wanted so badly. When we found out about your organization and the great things you do to help children in need I was overwhelmed.
The wheelchair came in her favorite color, Pink. It was amazing to see how fast she picked up on using the controls and maneuvering herself around. With her disability she won't walk, but now she has the independence to move herself around. This means the world to her!
Lucia is 11 and in a wheelchair, she works very hard trying to do things for herself. Anyone who works with special needs children knows how much effort they put in to do the simple little things, that we take for granted, like going from the den watching TV to the kitchen to get a drink.
For Lucia that wasn't something she could do on her own. You would not believe how excited she gets now that she has the power chair. She can actually "go" to get a drink!

Thank you seems too little to express how much your gift has meant to Lucia and my family.

                                        Sincerely,

                                        Tina

Don't Be A Pirate...Do Something
The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie  Unlike Larry the Cucumber's pirate alter-ego, Variety believes in doing more than just relaxing and not doing anything.
As a very special film within Variety's Special Needs Screening Series, Variety is hosting a free screening of The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie for families raising children with special needs.
While it may not be on opening weekend like many of our films in this series...we are making up to everyone by making this one free-to-all. That's right, everyone within a family with a special needs child is welcome to attend this screening.
Screenings will take place at Studio Movie Grill locations in Arlington, Lewisville and Plano.
Wearing Our Hearts on Our Sleeves
Variety's 2008 Gold Heart Lapel Pin  Variety is pleased to announce the 2008 addition to our Gold Hearts collection. Launched by Variety in Great Britian in 1991, the program has raised over $100 million to help children around the world through various Variety programs.
This unique fundraising program centers around the sale of a $2 Gold Heart Pin; the international symbol of love, hope and Variety the Children's Charity. Each year the collectible pin takes on a new design and a new slogan, but the symbol remains the same.
This year's motto, "A Child Needs Your Help", says it all.
You can get your Gold Hearts lapel pins now at Rave Motion Pictures and AMC theatres across the state. Pins will be available very soon at theatres owned and operated by Cinemark USA, Movie Tavern Partners, Premiere Cinemas, Starplex Cinemas and other locations.
The first $50,000 raised in pin sales by Variety of North Texas is matched dollar-for-dollar by a grant to assist in the development of The Variety Equestrian Center at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children in Temple, Texas. When complete, The Center will offer minimal mobility therapuetic horseback riding for children attending the residential camp.
If do not have a participating theatre in your area, cannot wait to get your new pin or need to start your collection...click here.
Variety has been promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children all across North Texas for more than 70 years.
