Willam Throws the Pitch of a Lifetime
William Hardeman    As part of Variety's first ever Taking 'em Out to the Ballgame series, sponsored by Rehab Specialties, one of Variety's own, William Hardeman, got to experience the thrill of a lifetime...throwing out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers baseball game.
The series gave over 300 North Texas children the opportunity to see one of three Texas Rangers games during the month of September.
In addition to all the exciting events (William's pitch at the first game, a fireworks show at the second and the opportunity to run the bases at the third game), the news media picked up on William's story and Variety's support. Articles ran in The Garland News, The Dallas Morning News and Garland Neighbors
Answering the Call
Matthew & Family   The very essence of Variety is helping children in need. Many times, this means financial support. Other times, it means providing children with opportunities to take part in programs and events that they would not ordinarily be able to take part in. At other times, it simply means answering the phone and providing a phone number.
Such was the case for Matthew and his family. Matthew is less than a year old and in need of a cranial remodeling helmet. His mother, Sharlon, contacted Variety after finding out that the device was going to cost the family approximately $4,500. Worst of all...the families insurance would not cover any of the expense.
That's when Variety suggested that she contact a provider that they had used in past for such devices for other children. After an initial consultation and sizing appointment, Sharlon was thrilled to learn that this version of the device would be covered by her insurance.  Thus, dropping her out of pocket expense from $4,500 to $450.
A savings of more than $4,000, just for calling Variety.
Helping Families in Need
In September, Variety's Heart of Variety Fund approved funding for four new families in need, and additional funding for a family previously supported.
The approved funding included: a powered wheelchair, a portable lift, a toilet seating system, an adaptive stroller and partial funding for a gait keeper. Further details on the children and their stories will be available soon.
These devices add more than $13,000 to the amount of funding that Variety has provided to families in need all across North Texas. But, due to financial constraints and other factors, Variety was unable to provide support to six other families for requested items of approximately $19,000 in September alone.
Won't you consider making a donation today in support of North Texas children and their families?
Variety has been promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children all across North Texas for more than 70 years.
