The Fresno Metro Black Chamber has been busy advocating for our members, creating new partnerships and exploring opportunities to build a stronger African-American business community.

A year ago, the Chamber set forth its 2009-10 Action Plan after months of focus groups, surveys and one-on-one conversations with business & civic leaders, our members and community partners. The plan breaks out into two parts: internal and external objectives. Here is a brief synopsis of our outcomes.

Internal Achievements:

- Merger of the SJV Black Chamber & Central CA Black Chambers of Commerce

- Formation of new FMBCC board of directors

- Creation of Fresno Metro Black Chamber Foundation

- Revision of the Membership benefits & application

- Developed a fiscal policy for check & balances, responsiveness and accountability

- Maintained communication through calls, the website, emails and other social networks

External Achievements:

- Monthly Black Business & Professional Network Mixers

- Quarterly Power Breakfast that engages candidates, elected official and business leaders

- Co-hosted the 2010 Fresno Juneteenth Celebration

- Hosted the 2010 Fresno Urban Leadership Conference

- Conducted Fresno Black Priorities Survey, the first community survey targeting Fresno African-Americans

We are just scratching the surface. This is the opportune time to invest in the Chamber and its future work. Here are a few things to expect in the coming months....

- Launching of a micro loan program

- Online membership directory

- Celebration of Entrepreneur: Honoring Fresno's Black Business Community

- Hue Awards: Recognizing Fresno's Top Companies for Diversity (March 2011)

- Fresno Urban Leaders Academy

Join our efforts to build capacity, collaboration for access to services, and connect our businesses and the African-American community. Become a member.

Excited about the Opportunities!

Are Campaigns Ignoring Black Media Outlets?

Submitted by Mark Kimber, Kimber & Kimber

A recent study of campaign advertising expenditures for the November 2010 California gubernatorial election by the nation's leading African American print advertising agency, KimberKimber.com, has revealed major discrepancies between mainstream media, Hispanic media, and African American media outlets by political candidate's and political party's nationwide. These discrepancies are being interpreted as racist and discriminatory in nature by the African American community and can easily be the deciding factor in many elections across the country.

The most glaring examples of these discrepancies were found in the current 2010 California gubernatorial race by Republican candidate Meg Whitman, whose campaign has spent a record 110 million dollars with mainstream and Latino media outlets while spending none of her campaign advertising dollars with African American media outlets. Similarly, the DNC (Democratic National Committee) is spending 50 million dollars in their national "Get Out the Vote" advertising campaign in the next three weeks and none with Black owned media in the state. Likewise, California's Democratic candidates have spent an estimated 80 million dollars collectively have not spent any of their ad dollars with Black owned media. Read more....

Are You Getting Your Piece of the Supplier Diversity Pie?
Piece of Money Pie
Under GO 156, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) required all investor-owned electric, gas, water and telecommunication utility companies to develop and implement programs to increase the utilization of woman and minority owned businesses. Procurement goals are 5% for women and 15% for minorities.

Certification of eligible suppliers was designed to encourage, recruit, and utilize woman and minority owned businesses by participating utilities.

Attend Thursday's workshop to learn how to get certified to do business with major utilities in California.

Certification is managed through a central Clearinghouse.  The Clearinghouse is a Commission-supervised entity whose primary purpose is to audit and verify the status of woman and minority owned businesses, and to establish and maintain a database of woman, minority, and service disabled veteran owned businesses that is accessible to the CPUC and to participating utilities. The Clearinghouse will be making a presentation at this workshop and will be helping participants submit all documents and information required for evaluation.

Think you are ready to get certified to do business with the likes of PG&E, AT&T, and Verizon? Click here for the information and items you need to bring with you to the Certification Workshop.
