On Thursday, May 28- The San Joaquin Valley Black Chamber of Commerce present at the 2009 State of the City Luncheon in full force as a co-host and with two tables as the Honorable Mayor Ashley Swearengin gave the address. Council President Cynthia Sterling introduced the Mayor and Pastor Sheryl Bowden of New Birth Christina Center gave the Invocation and Benediction.

The Mayor highlighted her proposed FY 2009-10 Budget, her accomplishments since taking office, and the new direction the City is taking.
 
The Chamber is following suit with the Mayor's mantra expressed during her presentation, "It's Different This Time". SJVBCC strives to be transparent and  accountable to the community while working with all level of the City governance to endure its members interest are well represented.

In addition, the Chamber has representation on the Mayor's Citizen Advisory Panel through Tate Hill, President/CEO and Advisory Team member, Richard 'Dick' Keyes where they have the opportunity to raise concerns, ask questions, provide insight and receive information pertaining the City.

A: Participate in the newly formed Fresno Citizens Academy
 
The Fresno Citizens Academy
is a free 7-week program designed to provide community members with a better understanding of the workings of their local government. The Citizen's Academy covers a wide range of topics, such as: how the annual budget is developed; how public safety resources are deployed; and what the city does to promote and support the local economy - to name just a few. The goal of the Fresno Citizens Academy is to better equip the community to fully participate in the process of building Fresno's future.
The Mayor and the Citizen Advisory Panel is necessary looking for the traditional leader-- CEO, Vice President, or Executive Director. This Academy was created with the average citizen in mind.

Applications for the Fresno Citizens Academy are now being accepted. Academy sessions are held on consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6pm - 8pm at Fresno City Hall and other City facilities. A full schedule will be provided before the first meeting.

The next two Fresno Citizen Academy programs will run fromJune 16th throughJuly 28th and again from October 6th through November 17th.
