Campaign Accelerate Meets its Match

Thank YouThanks to the support of our generous donors, Campaign ACCELERATE was an overwhelming success.

Here was the challenge: if we raised $125,000 in individual gifts between November 10 and December 31, a generous supporter would donate $250,000. We are thrilled to let you know that, combined with the match, we raised over $445,000 in just 7 weeks! We couldn't have done it without you, so please accept our heartfelt thanks.

As always, 100% of donations to the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation go directly to fund breakthrough scientific research of carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors. This is made possible by the generous support of its Board of Directors and corporate sponsors.

Spotlight on Team CFCF: Melanie Matyi

Melanie and Dennis When her AP English teacher suddenly left school to have surgery for his pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, Philadelphia 10th grader Melanie Matyi rallied her community to show their support.

The goal of the "Hope for Howie" car wash and bake sales was to raise money to cover Dennis Howie's travel expenses so he could be treated at the Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, LA. Thanks to an overwhelming outpouring of support, the group exceeded its goal, and Dennis requested that the additional funds support the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation's research mission.

"You really learn a lot when you get the community to reach out. It's so much more than the economic help - knowing that there is a group out there that cares... it's just stunning," says Dennis.

Melanie agrees. "You can't say, 'Someone else will do something.' Don't be afraid to be the one to do something big! People will respond and people will want to help you."

Scientists

Attention, Carcinoid and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Researchers:

Applications for the 2012 Caring for Carcinoid and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Grants for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research are due by January 17, 2012. We are seeking investigators pursuing innovative ideas and approaches that have a direct application and relevance to carcinoid cancer or pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field, as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research.

We expect to award a minimum of two grants of $250,000 each, paid over a two year period. Research areas may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature. The research priorities of CFCF include a desire to equitably provide support for both carcinoid tumor and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research.
