Announcing CFCF's Latest Research Grant

LikeThe Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) is pleased to award a two-year research grant to Nickolas Papadopoulos, Ph.D. from the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University.

With prior funding from CFCF, Dr. Papadopoulos and his team published the results of the first large-scale genome sequencing study of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

To build on compelling results, CFCF has awarded a second research grant to Dr. Papadopoulos to explore further the role of two mutations in neuroendocrine tumors. Dr. Papadopoulos will identify the molecular pathways that are affected by these mutations in order to uncover novel, targeted treatment approaches for neuroendocrine cancers as well as other cancers sharing these molecular pathways.

How Will You Spread Awareness All Year Long?

Daniel BirnsIn celebration of Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day, CFCF launched its new website feature, CFCF on the Move, a page for neuroendocrine cancer patients to raise awareness by sharing their adventures and accomplishments.

"CFCF On the Move" is a space for patients to show that, while they may have cancer, cancer doesn't have them!

Next time you travel someplace beautiful, win an award, or jump out of a plane, bring along a neuroendocrine cancer awareness item and submit your photos to CFCF on the Move. Already have a great shot of you with a zebra stuffed animal, NET Awareness pin or sunflower hat? Send your pictures in today

If you would like a CFCF wristband, please email [email protected].

Spotlight on Team CFCF Member Katy Esquivel

Daniel BirnsWhen her husband was diagnosed with carcinoid in March 2010, Katy Esquivel was searching for a way to cope with the stress, uncertainty and fear of having a loved one face cancer.

So she decided to complete the Miami Man Triathlon.

"I found focusing my energy on training to be a great distraction. I'm not a natural athlete, but running made me feel better and helped my stress level," she says.

"Putting myself out there was the biggest hurdle, but then I realized I was doing something bigger than just me. I'm raising money for a really good charity and doing something I wanted to do. Thinking about why I'm here and all the people who have been impacted by this disease made the difference in getting me through this race."

Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving!
