Further Research Progress from Johns Hopkins

Scientists from Johns Hopkins University have uncovered more information about the genetics of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors!
In January 2011, CFCF-funded researchers found that mutations in two genes were correlated with the formation of pancreatic neuroendocrine cancers. Alan Meeker, Ph.D. and his team have pursued these mutations and now have data suggesting that both of these genes are also linked to why the ends of cellular DNA (known as "telomeres") lengthen in patients with cancer.
"If the correlation holds up, we could use [this information] as a method of determining a patient's prognosis in addition to developing treatments that target these genes," says Dr. Meeker.

New Global Study of Radiopeptide Therapy

Results from a single-center, phase II trial of radiopeptide therapy with Yttrium-90 (Y-90) were recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and highlighted in Nature Reviews. 1,109 patients with a wide spectrum of metastatic neuroendocrine cancers came from 29 countries to participate in the study.
The authors found that response to Y-90 was associated with longer survival; however, this involved risk of severe, permanent renal toxicities. Therefore, the authors state more research is necessary to refine the clinical use of Y-90.
In addition, their data on both tumor and kidney uptake suggest that somatostatin receptor imaging may become a valuable predictive imaging tool. For more information, see the free abstract here. Any patients considering this or any other potential treatment should consult with a physician well-versed in treating neuroendocrine tumor patients. Please consult CFCF's Doctor Database or call 617-948-2514 for help finding an experienced clinician. |
